Water pipe smoking has the same respiratory effects as smoking cigarettes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? A new study published in the journal Respirology reveals that water pipe smoking, such as hookah or bong smoking, affects lung function and respiratory symptoms as much as cigarette smoking.

Most users of water pipes and many physicians believe that smoking through a water pipe filters out the toxic components of tobacco and is considerably less harmful than smoking cigarettes.

Led by Mohammad Hossein Boskabady, MD, PhD, of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, researchers set out to compare lung function and respiratory symptoms among water pipe smokers, deep or normal inhalation cigarette smokers, and non-smokers.

Three groups of smokers, including 57 water pipe smokers, 30 deep inhalation cigarette smokers (S-DI), and 51 normal inhalation cigarette smokers (S-NI) were identified and studied. In addition, 44 non-smokers were studied as a control group.

A questionnaire was administered to assess the prevalence and severity of respiratory symptoms and lung function tests performed on smokers and control subjects using a spirometer.

Results showed an increased prevalence and severity of respiratory symptoms among water pipe smokers and cigarette smokers. Similareffects of water pipe smoking and deep inhalation cigarette smoking on respiratory status were found.

Wheezing was present in 23% of water pipe smokers, 30% in S-DI, and 21.6% in S-NI. Chest tightness was present in 36.8% of water pipe smokers, 40% in S-DI, and 29.4% in S-NI. Cough was present in 21% of water pipe smokers, 36..7% of S-DI, and 19.6% of S-NI. Wheezing, chest tightness, and cough only occurred in non-smokers 9.1%, 13.3% and 6.8% respectively.

"Our study is the first report regarding the importance of the method of cigarette smoke inhalation with respect to effects on the respiratory system," Boskabady concludes. "Our findings reveal that there were profound effects of water pipe smoking on lung function values, which were similar to the effects observed in deep inhalation cigarette smokers."

No clear winners in trial of Anders Behring Breivik

Breivik got 21 years, but was found sane as he wanted. Prosecutors saw him jailed, but mishandled the psychiatric findings. And now the prime minister is feeling heat for security's slow response.

Breivik was caught on the island of Ut?ya with a Glock pistol, Ruger semi-automatic rifle, and an arsenal of ammunition after having killed 69 people at Labor party youth summer camp. He even confessed to the bomb attack on the government headquarters earlier that day that killed eight, and detailed his entire planning to police shortly after his capture.

By all measures, the case should have been over long ago. Instead, it dragged on for 13 months with a final verdict falling on Friday: The 33-year-old Norwegian and self-proclaimed militant nationalist was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 21 years? permanent detention for terrorist acts.

Now, there are renewed calls today for Jens Stoltenberg, Norway?s prime minister, to accept responsibility for failing to protect Norwegians from the attack and the slow police response that day.

After watching the trial for 10 weeks and listening to the debates since the attacks, one can?t help but feel something is lacking. In many ways, it is still not clear who really won.

Technically, Breivik did, at least on legal precedence. He was arguing to be judged sane so that his militant nationalist ideology would stand stronger. He attacked the Labor party targets because he faults them for allowing too many Muslim immigrants into Norway and thereby promoting the ?ethnic cleansing of indigenous Norwegians.? The court ruled that he was sane and not paranoid schizophrenic as the first of two forensic psychiatric reports concluded.

He also won by getting considerable media coverage of his political ideology during the trial.? Indeed, in the political manifesto he released online shortly before his killing spree, he referred to the trial as part of ?the propaganda phase? of his publicity efforts. That phase is expected to continue from prison, where he plans to write a trilogy of political books in English and correspond with supporters.

He did lose on one main point: that he be found not guilty.? Judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen rejected his argument that his planned massacre was a ?pre-emptive attack? to avoid a wider civil war that would ensue as a result of the Muslim colonization of Europe. Neither Norwegian law, nor the European Court of Human Rights, gives the right to assassinate government figures for extreme political purposes, she said as part of the historic 90-page verdict.

The Power of iTunes With the iPod | Computers and Technology

So, you know about iPods and the various ways that you can enjoy them ? including as you drive. Yet there?s a very big subject that we want to cover, because this is the biggest reason that people buy this neat little device: iTunes.

It?s not difficult to understand what iTunes is, and why people are somewhat addicted to it (in the good way, of course!). Look at it this way: the iPod is the hardware, and iTunes is the software. Or if you?d prefer a different analogy ? one that isn?t so technical ? imagine that the iPod is the radio itself, and iTunes are the music stations.

iTunes is the name of an online music store that sells countless numbers of audio tracks that include music, but also include books and other material, too.

While there are a number of websites

that legally sell music, iTunes is unarguably the most popular and the most well-known; and that trend doesn?t appear to be stopped whatsoever!

As of the end of the second quarter of 2004, iTunes had sold 70 million songs in its first year and offered 700,000 tracks. Both of these numbers have grown substantially since then, and analysts are busy tallying up the numbers for the rest of 2004, and now into 2005.

So?just how far reaching is iTunes popularity? Well, in England, it seems to be the favorite destination ? in fact the # 1 destination of people who are looking to purchase digital music. iTunes? market share in the UK is 54% while Napster has only 10%.

Young scientists make the cut

Thirty middle school students selected for final round of Broadcom MASTERS science competition

Web edition : Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

Forget the baking-soda volcano. With research ranging from the power of natural mosquito repellent to the adaptability of reef-building corals, a new crop of young science fair students are leaving old-school projects in the dust.

In September, 30 of these middle schoolers will head to Washington, D.C., to take part in the final stage of the Broadcom Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars, or MASTERS, program. This is the second year of the national science competition, which is sponsored by the Broadcom Foundation.

Announced on August 29, this year?s finalists include one 12-year-old from Massachusetts who figured out how to use the ocean?s waves to generate electricity. Another from California pitted an intelligent game-playing computer against human doctors and professors. But the competition doesn?t just consider the creativity and scientific merit of a student?s project; it also judges each finalist?s ability to solve problems, communicate and work in teams.

While in Washington, the 30 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade finalists will compete in a series of project showcases, individual interviews, and intellectually grueling team trials designed to test each student?s math and science mettle.

?It?s intensive,? says Stephanie Lemnios, Broadcom MASTERS program manager at the Society for Science & the Public, which runs the competition and publishes Science News. ?We get the students thinking a little bit out of the box.?

Team relays and group activities challenge students to work together. One activity, developed by the Washington, D.C., chapter of Engineers without Borders, is based on a real-life project to improve the lives of low-income villagers in Central America. ?To build an innovative workforce of scientists and engineers for the future, our kids need hands-on experiences to develop their science, technology, engineering and math skills,? says Paula Golden, executive director of Broadcom Foundation and director of community affairs for Broadcom Corp. The student groups have only 90 minutes to complete their tasks, but the competition?s organizers believe the kids are up to the challenge.

?These students show that with support and encouragement, middle schoolers can come up with creative approaches to many of the challenges faced by society,? says Elizabeth Marincola, president of SSP and publisher of Science News.

During their week in Washington from September 28 to October 3, finalists will also visit the Capitol to meet their elected representatives, tour historical sites and science organizations, and ? perhaps most importantly ? hang out with other like-minded kids.

?Middle school can be an awkward age,? Lemnios says. ?So for these students to meet other kids just like them is pretty cool.? One of the competition?s goals is to get ? and keep ? students excited about science, technology, engineering and math, she says. So far, the program seems to be succeeding.

In 2011 and again in 2012, the Broadcom MASTERS competition received more than 1,460 entries from students nominated by SSP-affiliated science fairs throughout the country. After competing last year, Ria Chhabra, one of the 2011 finalists, described her experiences in an e-mail: ?Even writing about the experience gives me goose bumps and this excited, warm feeling inside.?

Earlier this month, judges shaved the student entries down to 300 semifinalists. In the final round, a panel of five scientists and engineers cut the group down to 30.

Winners will be announced October 2 at an awards ceremony at the Carnegie Institution of Science headquarters in Washington. The top prize is a $25,000 education award, a gift from the Samueli Foundation. Each finalist will receive a $1,000 award from Broadcom for their school, finalists' classrooms will receive supplies and rewards from Elmer's Products.

Apple accessories--TVC-MALL: The entertainment office or ...

Why do we need Tablet PC? No reason to hate, not love for no reason, no reason to invent something created. Of bright pursuit Edison invented the light bulb, Bell invented the telephone voice of exploration for, and desire for image Baird invented the TV .... Every invention come out, have a human needs in the motivations nowadays The same is true with people's lives have been closely related to the computer.

Initially calculated in order to save time, to now become essential office entertainment tool, users are increasingly demanding needs of its development has great merit. From large to small and then micro computer volume growing tiny chip performance collection is becoming more and more powerful.

However, when the user is no longer satisfied with the traditional desktop PC stereotypes, even disgruntled laptop, computer and go to what road? Perhaps, Steve Jobs and Intel, we pointed out the two directions: Tablet PC with this ultra-extreme. Between super pole this appearance also continues the shape of the traditional notebook, but made lighter, thinner only. But the Tablet PC to overturn the awareness of the people on the "computer", it is a new product or even can not be overstated - only a touch screen, no keyboard, with a few necessary interface buttons, there is a two cameras; system is no longer on a Windows PC, Linux, Mac OS, but replaced the phone, iOS, Android, BlackBerry OS, webOS - perhaps too absolute, after all, two months after Windows 8 will appear in the Tablet PC and BlackBerry OS webOS already nobody cares.

The entertainment office or newsletter? Why do we need Tablet PC

If the demand for work and entertainment pursuit stimulate the progress of a traditional PC, and that is what led to the birth of the Tablet PC - bored desktop PC can not be moved? Tired of the laptop can not be used at any time? Or just want a not the same with the desktop PC and notebook computer? Maybe Microsoft then conceived the "Tablet PC", the focus but can be "anywhere office"; Jobs proposed "Pad", the focus of the Department has been turned into home entertainment. With the sale of the iPad, consumers quickly accepted this alternative computer - because it manipulation convenient, easy to carry, and has not lost in the traditional PC functionality.

Although by iPad Dongfeng, tablet fire burning for two years and two months after the will was splashed with a bucket of hot oil, but If you stop and think about it, why do we need it? As it may seem dispensable, not as a PC, mobile phone into our lives. 1,000 reader's mind there are one thousand Hamlet, if you want to answer the "Why do you need a Tablet PC?" Such a simple pole, a person might be able to give ten answer. But I was thinking, Regardless of the answer will be, but had to escape from three aspects. As to which of the three aspects, to the next, so I 11 for you to answer.

Entertainment

Obviously, open flat precedent, entertainment from the iPad is the tablet a feature of the most basic, the most indispensable. Even in its application mall for business office E E there are nearly a thousand games, even if it is built for the students schoolwork OZing Q Wang also puzzle entertainment pages, not to mention the theory to occupy the market, consumer-grade Tablet?

Jobs push iPad, aimed at the home market. Usually like for home purchase PC leisure time games, when people choose to buy a Tablet PC, it's usually come to use it to spend their leisure time the purpose - alone will inevitably boring car, holding it to look at the novel unknowingly has arrived at the destination; came home from work at night, lying on a bed, sofa, holding it to brush microblogging unknowingly to sleep time.

Entertainment, essential functions of the basic tablet

I know a certain someone would say: "you cited, I use the phone completely, why bother with the tablet?" In fact, even the author's friend was also suggested that the tablet seems a bit dispensable - see novels, watching video, the Internet, play games, which is a smart phone can not do?

Few phone also has features, although I collectively the sake of "entertainment", but the term "entertainment" but written language. Sum if the phrase, "play": the game play, the movie is playing, the Internet is also playing. However, you do not think, play, it is important not play anything, but play was cool?

You go to the playground, slow sightseeing car ride, or go straight to the towering roller coaster? You go to the cinema, select IMAX 3D, or an ordinary 2D? The answer is not self-evident. Tablet PC and mobile phone in the "entertainment" a contrast, just as so: 10.1 inches 1920X1080 full HD screen, you also staring at the 4 inch 800X480 little one what? 7 inches not to mention allow more than paper books read feeling you holding 3.5 inches looked a not show how many words the phone screaming is not enjoyable it? 9.7 inches easily render the whole scene of the game, you also holding 4.3 inches complain about playing a shooting aimed at all strenuous What?

Large-screen flat-panel small size of the phone, which would you choose for playing?

Also, do not forget that the mobile phone is the most basic and most important function is not entertainment, but the calls and text messages.

You wish to play the game was in full swing when received BOSS phone did not say a few words on a sudden no power? Do you want to go out to run the photo pass colleague reported results did not take long battery running out? You hope when night fell walking danger results on the way home the phone is turned off? On the road to "do their job" when the phone more powerful at the same time, it seems to have some deviation from excessive application to make it often stretched in terms of power, even in the most need it, when even their own not competent - vertical stunts one thousand kinds, was born unlucky hero, nonetheless, nonetheless.

Let go of the phone, let it return to their own

Even if the usual set a thousands of pet, but in a pinch, but chickened out how this phone is not irritating. Or let the smart phone, let it return true nature of it. As for entertainment? Tablet PC to take over its own superior.

3, following the PC after an office assistant

Second, office

As just mentioned, Now PC into our lives - to the company, to turn on the computer to see if there is no new mail; After returning home, often play online games To log in to ease the day's stress - whether office or entertainment, the computer plays a crucial role. Name for itself in the tablet computer, dubbed the word "computer" Although there is not like a traditional PC do so that people can not do without it, but they can do the day-to-day tasks of entertainment and office.

"Used to play is certainly no problem, but you say to the office, I have a laptop, also need the tablet it?"
In fact, no lack of business focus on handwriting function tablet market

If you mention the tablet is used for office, I guess there will be a lot of people have such doubt. After all, the tablet is a pure touch operation (or join the handwriting function), for entry related work to do with the text, not as keyboard typing along easily and quickly; Even modify images, Adobe Photoshop Touch a class of software functionality than PS slightly lacking on the PC; daily office without MS Office also can not be compatible on Android, iOS two platforms. May say, the Tablet PC in the office slightly short board.

However, this situation will soon gone - Windows 8 coming.

Windows 8, has too much information, I will not go into here. We just need to know, wait until after Oct. 26, the tablet sector will no longer be the two-party hegemony iOS and Android. And Win8 tablet - said on behalf of Surface to seem - we brought more than just a brand new operating system. It also means that we will see those familiar with the software on the PC plate, such as just said Office.

Perhaps someone will say: "Even if Windows 8 can be used as a touch, even on a PC with the software used to 'transplant' to the plate, but I just think the tablet brought the office if not as a notebook." Well, not compare what point? There is no keyboard? Can not connected to the projector? Is too heavy? Or life is too short?

Said flat too heavy to actually make a joke, it is even accompanied by keyboard base, it also can still single hand easily holding use - Who wants to try his hand holding the notebook will not take long, half an hour better. To know even the ultra-extreme, there are still nearly 1.5kg weight. The Tablet weigh? But ultra-pole of the fraction of Bale.

Referred to the keyboard base, to say a few words. In fact, not only is Microsoft Surface prepared accessories, long before Microsoft, there are vendors ready for its products supporting external keyboard, Transformer Pad is one example. When the with keyboard base "fit", even Android tablets, at first glance looks like a mini laptop equipped with Windows 8 Pro Tablet faced the world - If you wait until the x86 architecture, will not be a trumpet over most of this?

External keyboard for tablet easily cope with office

Also hardcore Tablet Input not speed it? Tablet PC external keyboard compact size, to Input feel they did not lose to a laptop keyboard. And this hybrid tablet seems to have the potential to become a future trend - that rainy day preparatory Win8 tablet competitive commercial field Hao, said simple user-friendly Internet chat mentioning has frequently manufacturers announced new accessories contained in an external keyboard Android tablet.

Suddenly no electricity resulting in lost orders usually 8-10 hours of battery life, even over most of this is difficult to achieve this figure, do not have to worry for customers using the flat-panel display, to explain the product information. But then the projector can not, but it is a must acknowledge the weaknesses, it seems to have no tablet mini VGA interface; However, if just for three or two people show PPT, do not projector worth mentioning.

Tablet browser file What, in fact, easily

Light weight, long battery life, perhaps comes with a keyboard - the Tablet PC is used to send and receive mail, do Excel tables show the PPT, what point is better laptop it? Moreover, it not only allows you to get rid of static posture sitting on a chair - as long as you are willing, can lie in bed lying on the sofa; It also allows you to truly anywhere office - even when the car is can also come to write the program plan, and do not have to worry about the thigh is grilled hot.

3. 3G Communication

Like cell phones, with the continuous development of flat-panel, and its function is more and more. Such as Tablet PC, to the Internet, only with Wifi; now with the Tablet PC, to the Internet, you can also select 3G. Products of the mobile Internet era, if you can not do the "mobile" and "Internet", what face? Mobile, Tablet PC naturally doing my part; but interconnected aspects, only support Wifi tablet products seem to appear less competent, and can not be done at any time access to the Internet - Is on the bus even when the phone set up a hot spot it? So, 3G module introduced become a necessity.

Only need to insert a 3G phone card, or plug in the 3G network card, Tablet PC really been integrated into the mobile Internet wave, as long as the signal, you can enjoy surfing the Internet, do not have to worry about no wireless network also do not have to be sorry subway bus can only use flat reading novels videos or playing games. After all, this is a communication without limits era, not the Internet? So how can do it.

Moreover, many support 3G Tablet PC also comes with a "gift" - communication, that is, can dial phone, send and receive SMS. This is a feature, although at first glance slightly tasteless - the phone of course little tablet phone need to have - but the key time to still be able to play a strange effect: for example, out of a meeting, you need to keep in touch with colleagues, the cell phone battery consumption exhausted, such cases do happen to have a tablet can call, at least not work very suddenly delayed.

In fact, there really so adding 3G module, support the call 7-inch tablet in hand, can even consider a phone set the shelf - perhaps only a little less than is needed always ready headphones used to receive calls.

It appears that the Tablet PC was born not long, the size is not the "little guy", he served as the house long. Steal the division after the results, but it is possible to cope with the attack of both sides: both the large size of the smart phone, there are low-cost ultra-extreme. 5.5-inch cross-border mobile phone and a 5-inch cross-border tablet, the boundary between the already fuzzy, have been difficult to distinguish between mobile phone or tablet; gap between the ultra-extreme, although it seems more significant, but Windows 8 Pro tablet configuration has been to allow it to low-end ultra-pole of this challenge - just do not really faint first from 1000 U.S. knife, a smaller size, lighter weight, battery life longer "mini ultra-extreme" certainly will people like.

If you like to lie in bed to enjoy the fun of surfing the web, if you are busy every half an hour is necessary to send and receive e-mail, if you often go out to meet and to be with colleagues at all times to keep in touch - still thinking about the phone you? Why not come to a Tablet PC? Has a larger screen, you can online anytime, when necessary, to take over the phone, and perhaps soon, the Tablet PC will be like a traditional PC, completely infiltrated our lives to become another essential goods .

Boy charged with attempted murder in Baltimore school shooting

(Reuters) - A 15-year-old boy suspected of shooting a fellow student on the first day of classes at a Baltimore-area high school has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, but police say they do not know the motive for what apparently was a well-planned attack.

Robert Wayne Gladden Jr. also left an ominous message on his Facebook page before heading off to Perry Hall High School in Baltimore's northeast suburbs on Monday morning.

"First day of school, last day of my life," the posting read. It concluded: "fuck the world."

Gladden was charged Tuesday as an adult and also faces a first-degree assault charge, Baltimore County Police officials said. He is being held without bail ahead of a preliminary hearing set for September 7.

The shooting is the latest incident of gun violence in a summer plagued by troubling shootings in the United States.

In July, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. In August, a suspect described by authorities as a white supremacist killed six people at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin before committing suicide.

Gladden has been cooperating with the investigation, but police said they still do not know what led him allegedly to open fire in the school cafeteria around 11 a.m..

Counter to press reports, Baltimore County Police Corporal Cathy Batton said Gladden was not a victim of bullying. "He denied being bullied," Batton said. "That was not the reason."

"When he walked into the cafeteria and pulled the trigger he did not have any intended target," Batton said.

Batton said Gladden had carefully planned the attack.

Gladden disassembled a double-barreled shotgun he took from his father's house, packed it into his school bag along with a bottle of vodka and hid the weapon in a school bathroom, Batton said. The teen allegedly returned, re-assembled the weapon, drank some of the vodka, and went back into the cafeteria.

A guidance counselor rushed and tackled Gladden when he saw the student produce the gun, but Gladden fired one shot into a crowd of students, striking classmate Daniel Borowy in the back, Batton said. Borowy remains hospitalized in critical condition.

In the work and education section of the boy's Facebook page, located under the handle "Bobby Gladden (SuicidalSmile)," he lists attending Perry Hall but also working for "The Manson Family," an apparent reference to Charles Manson, who is serving a life sentence for directing the 1969 murder of actress Sharon Tate and six others.

The "About Bobby" section reads: "im a meathead, and that's about it."

Hands-on with the Samsung ATIV Smart PC (aka the Series 5 Slate)

Would a Series 5 Slate be just as sweet under any other name? We've already got hands-on with the ATIV Smart PC Pro (called the Series 7 Slate in the US) and now we're going to show you the wonder that is the ATIV Smart PC -- aka, the Series 5 Slate on this side of the Atlantic. And what can we say? It's a lot like the Series 7 we checked out, though this guy is of course a smidge thinner and lighter, given the fanless design and inclusion of an Atom-based Clover Trail processor instead of something in the Ivy Bridge family.

Another difference: that 11.6 inch display. It's still bright, of course, but the resolution is a lower 1,366 x 768, as opposed to the 1080p panel used in the Series 7 / Smart PC Pro. That caveat aside, the Series 5 / Smart PC is still pretty sexy, with that vibrant display and brushed metal back -- though, as mentioned in our hands-on with the dock, that beauty clashes a bit with the relative cheapness of the keyboard.

As you may have read, the two slates also have stylus slots, though the S Pen was nowhere in sight during our demo -- perhaps to keep it out of the hands of sneaky bloggers. In the meantime, we've got some hands-on photos, but we encourage you to refer back to our Series 7 / Smart PC Pro hands-on to compare the designs, and get a better feel for the custom apps Samsung has bundled.

Dana Wollman contributed to this report.

Protect your Hardwood Floors from Furniture Weight

When hardwood floors are newly installed, they look lustrous and elegant. They are so shiny that you feel like not walking on them as they may get damaged. Hardwood floors are quite durable and that is why they are meant to increase a property value. Given the fact that hardwood floors last really long, pressure of heavy furniture, exposure to moisture and walking on them with high heels can damage the quality of this type of flooring. However, there are certain things that you can do to protect your precious hardwood flooring from these damaging probabilities especially from furniture weight.

There are several products available for hardwood protection from furniture weight. For example, you can use furniture pads that are cork or felt pads. Place these pads on the furniture legs to reduce the pressure of the heavy furniture from your hardwood floor and thereby, prevent denting. Different furniture comes in varied sizes and weight. Therefore, the size of the furniture pad should differ with the size as well as the heaviness of the furniture.

You should be careful while moving the furniture. Hurrying while moving the furniture from one place to another can cause scratches on the hardwood floor easily. It is better to use a trolley, felt pads or a piece of plywood to protect the floor when you are moving furniture. You should take care of one thing always in this respect and that is to avoid sliding the furniture. Instead pick it up and move it. You may require help from others for this job, so do not feel shy to ask for help if you want to protect your valuable hardwood flooring. Also check that the furniture is moved properly during deliveries or when you are using movers.

You can visit a home improvement store to purchase area rugs that come with padding. Apart from adding a fine contrast to your room, area rugs also add padding between the weight of the furniture and the floor. When you are using area rugs, make sure that you use those that provide padding. Using area rugs without padding can damage your hardwood floor. In case, you have area rugs (without padding) at home, you can attach the padding with a tape.

Recoating your valuable hardwood floors is a good option. This should be done every 7 to 10 years as this forms an important part of proper cleaning and damage preventive methods for hardwood flooring. This particular preventive measure not only makes your hardwood floor strong and durable and lustrous but also protects the floor from the pressure produced by heavy furniture and other weighty items. Recoating provides a solid layer to your flooring. It gives protection against scratches and dents. You can save a lot of money regarding hardwood floors repairs in future.

These are the various ways by which you can protect your hardwood floors from furniture weight. You can also do a research on hardwood protectives products on the Internet for this purpose.

5 Ways to Create a Healthy Work Environment | Business 2 ...

In the modern world of business, it can be easy to forget how important a good working environment is to the success of a company. However, as many different prominent studies have shown, worker productivity is significantly affected by the nature of a company?s work environment. Interpersonal relations between employees, the size and location of the work environment, and many other factors can have an outsized impact on the morale and, as a result, the productivity of workers.

For this reason, creating a healthy work environment is an important consideration for business owners and managers to keep in mind. The following are five ways in which this critical organizational objective can be achieved.

Provide workplace equipment that promotes ergonomic health

One of the most common problems experienced by employees involves physical discomfort caused by their work environments. This can cause distraction, making it difficult for employees to focus on the task at hand and potentially requiring time away from work to recover from lower back pain or other ergonomic issues.

Fortunately, there are a wide range of different types of office equipment that can be used to help promote employees? ergonomic health. Adjustable chairs and desks, for instance, can help to ensure that all employees are comfortable in their work environment. Furthermore, ergonomic keyboards and mouse pads can help prevent the development of painful medical conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Institute workplace health initiatives

Workplace health initiatives can help to improve employee morale and reduce time away from work. Whether this means providing employees with healthy lunch options, encouraging employee fitness with workplace exercise programs or gym membership vouchers, or having a speaker series relating to healthy living, creative workplace health initiatives can be a significant aid to creating a healthy, happy work environment.

Plan appropriately for environmental weather conditions

For work environments that may be affected by weather conditions, it is important to have a plan in place to ensure that these conditions do not unduly impact workers. OSHA has provided a guideline for helping employers ensure that their workers are not harmed by overly warm work environments, such as those which may be experienced by outdoor workers in the hot summer months. Similar considerations should be made for other weather-related issues, such as cold weather and heavy rain.

Encouraging a flexible work environment

All employees are different, and as a result may thrive in different types of work environments. To maximize the productivity and effectiveness of all its employees, businesses should try to find ways to increase workplace flexibility. This can be as simple as allowing employees to listen to music at their workstations, to bigger changes such as allowing employees to set a work schedule that will better fit their personal needs. The point is not the specific changes which are made, but rather, the fostering of a work environment in which employees feel that their own needs and input are valued and respected.

Avoid hostile work environments

Stress is a serious problem for many workers, particularly in busy office environments in which meeting deadlines is crucial to job performance. Reducing stress can be achieved in a number of different ways, but one of the easiest is discouraging intrapersonal conflict between employees, which in a worst-case scenario can lead to the development of a hostile work environment in which some workers feel that they are the targets of unfair, malicious behavior. In some cases, this type of situation can even become a legal issue, as an employment lawyer can explain. Improving communication between employees and fostering a friendly work atmosphere can help to avoid this type of issue.

NASA to beam new will.i.am song from Mars

A song called "Reach for the Stars" will make its debut, appropriately, from space.

NASA plans to broadcast the tune, written by rapper and songwriter will.i.am, from its Curiosity rover, newly landed on the surface of Mars.

Though Curiosity has no speakers, it will transmit the song via radio waves back to Earth to be received at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET) Tuesday during an educational event at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"Members of the team that successfully landed the rover on Mars earlier this month will explain to students the mission and the technology behind the song's interplanetary transmission," NASA officials wrote in a statement. "Will.i.am will then premiere 'Reach for the Stars,' a new composition about the singer's passion for science, technology and space exploration."

During the event, NASA scientists and mission managers will talk about the Curiosity mission and explain the technology behind the broadcast to students. It won't be the first broadcast from space ? NASA used the Mars rover on Monday to broadcast a spoken message from the space agency's chief, Charles Bolden.

The musician will.i.am, a member of the Black Eyed Peas, was at JPL on Aug. 5 to watch Curiosity land on Mars. The car-sized, $2.5 billion rover is beginning a two-year mission to investigate whether Mars ever had the conditions necessary to support microbial life.

Nana Diana Takes A Break: Alphabet Laughs-M Is For Marriage - Yes

There was so much going on
that I forgot to
post about our
Anniversary~
August 17th.

Here we are-

THIRTY SEVEN YEARS AGO!

It was a hot August day

in 1975.
Yes...yes...she wore flowers in her hair....

When anyone asks how

long we have been married

we respond in unison

37 YEARS...
Well, I say it immediately..
MyHero can never remember
exactly how long we have
been married.

He says- Seems like yesterday.

I say- Seems like forever.

The straightman

and the

joker.

We make quite a pair.

It has not been an easy

37 years, despite what it

may look like from the outside.

We both came out of broken

relationships....

and probably should have gotten

to really know each other

BEFORE we got married.

We dated 30 days before

we said

I DO

under an old oak tree

in

Alva, Florida.

There were lots of ups and downs

over the years.

Some easy to accept,

others much harder to deal with.

BUT-

If?WE can do this-

If WE can hang in there for the long haul,

then I believe that if

two people really

WANT TO

make a relationship work...

they can...

and will...

and should.

Take a look at your partner
today...a really hard look...
and think about your
life without them.
Marriage is not always easy,
but no one ever promised us
that it would be.

I only have one piece of
advice for you....
Keep your sense of humor.
Why?
Because you are going to
NEED IT!
......Trust me on this.....

Circumcision Benefits Outweigh Risks, Doctors Say

The nation's most influential pediatricians group says the health benefits of circumcision in newborn boys outweigh any risks and insurance companies should pay for it.

In its latest policy statement on circumcision, a procedure that has been declining nationwide, the American Academy of Pediatrics moves closer to an endorsement but says the decision should be up to parents.

"It's not a verdict from on high," said policy co-author Dr. Andrew Freedman. "There's not a one-size-fits-all-answer." But from a medical standpoint, circumcision's benefits in reducing risk of disease outweigh its small risks, said Freedman, a pediatric urologist in Los Angeles.

Recent research bolstering evidence that circumcision reduces chances of infection with HIV and other sexually spread diseases, urinary tract infections and penis cancer influenced the academy to update their 13-year-old policy.

Their old stance said potential medical benefits were not sufficient to warrant recommending routinely circumcising newborn boys. The new one says, "The benefits of newborn male circumcision justify access to this procedure for those families who choose it." The academy also says pain relief stronger than a sugar-coated pacifier is essential, usually an injection to numb the area.

In its latest policy statement on circumcision, a procedure that has been declining nationwide, the American Academy of Pediatrics moves closer to an endorsement but says the decision should be up to parents. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke) Close Circumcision Ban: San Francisco Man Pushes Cause Watch Video

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Convention has estimated circumcision costs range from about $200 to $600 nationwide. Coverage varies among insurers and several states have stopped Medicaid funding for circumcisions.

The new policy was published online Monday in Pediatrics. It comes amid ongoing debate over whether circumcision is medically necessary or a cosmetic procedure that critics say amounts to genital mutilation. Activists favoring a circumcision ban made headway in putting it to a vote last year in San Francisco but a judge later knocked the measure off the city ballot, ruling that regulating medical procedures is up to the state, not city officials.

In Germany, Jewish and Muslim leaders have protested a regional court ruling in June that said circumcision amounts to bodily harm.

Meantime, a recent study projected that declining U.S. circumcision rates could add more than $4 billion in health care costs in coming years because of increased illness and infections.

Circumcision involves removing foreskin at the tip of the penis. The procedure can reduce germs that can grow underneath the foreskin, and complications, including bleeding and infection, are rare, the academy says.

Despite the U.S. decline, about half of baby boys nationwide still undergo circumcision, or roughly 1 million each year. The country's overall rate is much higher than in other developed nations, but U.S. rates vary by region and are higher in areas where it is a cultural or religious tradition, including among Jews and Muslims.

Psychologist Ronald Goldman, director of an anti-circumcision group, the Circumcision Resource Center, said studies show circumcision causes loss of sexual satisfaction ? a claim the academy said is not supported by the research it reviewed ? and can be psychologically harming. Goldman contends medical studies showing benefits are flawed and that the academy's new position is "out of step" with medical groups in other developed countries.

Pediatricians' group shifts in favor of circumcision

The American Academy of Pediatrics has shifted its official position on the contentious issue of infant circumcision, stating Monday that the medical benefits of the procedure for baby boys outweigh the small risks.

In its first new policy statement on the issue since 1999, the academy said that circumcision reduced risks of urinary tract infections in infants and of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases later in life ? and that the complications associated with the procedure were infrequent and mostly minor.

But the physicians' group stopped short of recommending the sometimes controversial practice for all newborn boys, urging parents to be guided by their religious, ethical and cultural practices in addition to the science.

"This is a decision parents should make based on what they think is most important for their child's welfare," said Dr. Douglas Diekema, a pediatric emergency specialist and bioethicist at Seattle Children's Hospital who was a member of the task force. "The [medical] benefit may not be so compelling when it's stacked up against other considerations."

The academy reexamines its policies on a regular basis, Diekema said. In 2005, it reaffirmed the 1999 guidelines, which acknowledged some potential health benefits of removing the foreskin of the penis but said that they did not outweigh risks.

But during the most recent review it became "pretty clear that there had been a lot of scientific literature that had not been reflected in 1999, and it was time for a revision," he said.

The task force spent more than three years examining 1,031 peer-reviewed articles published between 1995 and 2010. The studies dealt with various aspects of male circumcision, including medical benefits, risks and complications; costs; cultural and religious influences; and effects on sexual function.

Some of the evidence hadn't changed much since the earlier analysis, Diekema said, including results indicating that risks associated with infant circumcision were low.

But new data supporting the medical benefits were compelling, he added.

Three randomized controlled trials from Africa, for example, showed that circumcision reduced men's risk of contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Additional research supported those findings.

Studies also linked circumcision to reduced risk of other sexually transmitted diseases, including herpes, syphilis and human papillomavirus, which is linked to penile cancer in men and cervical cancer in women.

The new policy is "a little bit of a stronger statement about the benefits," said Diekema, who characterized the change as "a difference in tone more than anything."

Experts said that most physicians were already aware of the growing evidence in favor of circumcision and that the new guidelines wouldn't change much in doctors' offices.

"From the perspective of most pediatricians, this is business as usual," said Dr. Carlos Lerner, medical director of UCLA Children's Health Center.

Circumcision has fallen out of favor with American parents over the last few decades, with rates falling from about 80% in the 1970s and 1980s to below 55% in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Some object to the procedure on the grounds that it is irreversible and performed without the patient's consent. Opponents also argue that it is traumatic for the infant and impairs later sexual function, though the technical report accompanying the policy noted that the task force did not find evidence supporting that belief.

Other parents may decide against circumcision because they can't afford it. Medicaid programs in 18 states ? including California ? as well as some health insurance companies have stopped paying for the procedure. Some people trace those decisions to the academy's 1999 guidelines stating that circumcision is not necessary, Diekema said.

The new policy could bring about a shift in affordability. The guidelines now make plain that the benefits of circumcision are great enough to "justify access to this procedure for families choosing it and to warrant third-party payment for circumcision of male newborns."

A study published last week in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine attempted to tally the costs involved. Researchers calculated that if circumcision rates remained at current levels, the lifetime healthcare costs for all babies born in a calendar year would be about $211 million higher than if rates were the same as in years past.

The academy's new policy urges physicians to inform parents "in a nonbiased manner" of all the benefits and risks of circumcision; to make sure parents understand that it is an elective procedure; and to teach new parents how to care for their newborn's penis, whether it is circumcised or not.

The guidelines also emphasize that sterile techniques and effective pain management should always be provided.

Advice For Planning A Home Improvement Project | lmaureen.com

A simple way to improve your bathroom is by repainting it. Always use a satin/eggshell or semi-gloss paint, as this is more mold resistant than a flat paint, and can also be wiped down more easily. When choosing a color, take into account the size of the bathroom. If it is very small, then opt for a light color. If the ceiling is of low or average height, then consider painting it a shade lighter than the walls. This will create the illusion that the ceiling is higher.

If you are looking for home improvement projects that are guaranteed to raise the value of your home, you can?t go wrong with a bathroom or kitchen remodel. Builders and real estate agents estimate that perfecting these rooms is likely to earn you more than 100 percent back on your investment when you put your home up for sale.

When you reorganize your garage, make a clean sweep. Take everything out rather than just shuffling junk around inside the garage. By doing it this way, you can examine all of your stored treasures and decide which ones you can get rid of to make better use of your storage space.

When looking to improve your home, consider going with Compact Fluorescent Lights. CFLs do not use as much energy as a normal light. They last a lot longer. When you switch your lights to Compact Fluorescent Lights, you will save money on your energy bills. CFLs do contain mercury, so you will need to figure out how to properly dispose of them.

If you really want to change the value of your home, you will have to become involved in some kind of home improvement. If you don?t have a lot of money, you should think about investing only in a simple decorator, in order to help you make the key decisions in what you should change.

Is it cheaper to do it yourself or pay someone else? If you decide to completely re-do your bathroom, but know nothing about plumbing, it might be beneficial to pay a plumber to come in. Also, you can check out the self help books at your local building supply. Don?t be afraid to ask. A simple project shouldn?t cost more because of inexperience.

If you own a smartphone, use it to help you collect inspiration for your next painting project. There are a variety of apps available that will match paint colors to anything that you can snap a photo of, so you can collect potential paint chips right on your phone. Some apps will even allow you to order a sample of a shade you like.

Always make sure your air conditioner filters are clean and are replaced regularly. When the filters for your AC are dirty, the airflow is restricted. This causes your AC unit to use more energy, driving up the cost of your energy bill. Therefore, keeping filters clean ensures you enjoy a reduction in your monthly energy expense.

Don?t be afraid to use bright colors in the decor of your home. Paint a wall pink or red if you want to. It?s only paint, you can always re-paint it later. The most important thing is letting your own personality shine through in the style of your home.

Improving the air quality inside your home can be an invaluable home improvement for both your health and the resale value of your house. The first step would be to replace any old carpets or have them professionally cleaned, as they could be hiding contaminants, allergens and unpleasant odors. Secondly, if your budget allows, install an energy efficient air conditioning system.

An easy change that you can make in your kitchen is to change the faucet on your sink. Home improvement stores now have a wide selection of faucets from which you can choose from. You can, typically, install the new faucet yourself within a few minutes.

For trouble-free landscaping, take care to choose plants, bushes and trees that are native or naturalized to your area. When you do this, you will find that you have been much more successful landscaping projects. Additionally, your native or naturalized plants will need very little care and water to keep them healthy and happy.

As you can see, home improvement has the potential to do a lot of good in the aesthetics of your home as well as it?s market value. Making some wise investments may really pay off in the long run and make your home more energy efficient and valuable.

Survey Claims Only A Tiny Percent Of Ad ... - Business Insider

According to?The Creative Group's?survey of 500 U.S. advertising and marketing execs, only an incredibly small percent of agencies are on Pinterest.

The results find:

  • 7 percent already use it for business
  • 10 percent plan to?start?using Pinterest in the near-ish future
  • 44 percent have zero interest in using Pinterest for business purposes

According to the survey, a staggering 18 percent of marketers have?never even heard?of Pinterest. Considering the social media site's meteoric rise, you'd have to assume their shops are based out of remote, Wi-Fi-free caves.

Consumers, on the other hand, are loving the social media darling, which grew from from approximately 1 million to 20 million users between July 2011 and July 2012.?

Kantar Media Company's Compete?conducted an online shopper intelligence survey suggesting that one in four consumers spend less time on other social media sites like Facebook and Twitter in favor of Pinterest, and 15 percent claim that they don't use any social media sites except for Pinterest.

Considering that the sharing site is photo-based, brands have produced some visually compelling work on Pinterest.?(Uniqlo found a really cool way to create a scroll animation on the site).

Donna Farrugla, executive director of The Creative Group,?explained the small agency turnout as follows: "Pinterest has attracted a huge following quickly, but companies may be waiting to see if its popularity will last and what the potential business uses are in order to determine if a presence there makes sense."

Only two percent of Canadians deny climate change

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Only two per cent of Canadians believe climate change is not occurring, a new important survey released August 24 by IPAC-CO2 Research Inc. concluded.

The survey comes on the heels of Alberta Premier Alison Redford's recent push for a National Energy Strategy, which would address the future of Canada's oil and gas industries, and its approach to carbon management.

"Our survey indicates that Canadians from coast to coast overwhelmingly believe climate change is real and is occurring, at least in part due to human activity" explained Dr. Carmen Dybwad, CEO of the environmental non-government organization said. "These findings have been consistent from 2011 and 2012. Canadians care about issues like extreme weather, drought and climate change."

Opinions about the cause of climate change and how to combat it are, however, sharply divided among the provinces.

"Canadians most commonly (54%) believe that climate change is occurring partially due to human activity and partially due to natural climate variation," said Briana Brownell of Insightrix Research, who conducted the survey for IPAC-CO2.

"Residents of Quebec (44 %), Atlantic Canada (34%) and British Columbia (32 %) are more likely to believe climate change is occurring due to human activity than those on the Prairies (Alberta and Saskatchewan 21 %, Manitoba 24 %)."

Canadians are also divided on what they believe should be the priorities to fight climate change.

A total of 35 % of Canadians believe the priority should be to promote cleaner cars running on electricity or low-carbon fuels while only 16 % favored a tax on carbon dioxide emissions from the whole economy. Support for a carbon tax is lowest in B.C. (6%) and highest in Quebec (24%).

A key solution cited by Canadians is Carbon Capture and Storage, or CCS, which involves capturing carbon dioxide from an industrial source of greenhouse gases, transporting it, and storing it deep in the Earth's subsurface.

A majority of Canadians agree that capturing and storing carbon dioxide should be compulsory when building a new coal (59%) or natural gas (57%) power plant, though Canadians are concerned about the risks associated with CCS.

Quebec residents (71 %) would be concerned if carbon dioxide was stored underground within 1.5 kilometres to 3 kilometres from their home, while Saskatchewan residents (43%) were the least worried.

Residents of B.C. (60%) are most likely to believe that the storage of carbon dioxide represents a safety risk in the future. Again, Saskatchewan residents (48%) are significantly less likely to hold this belief.

"CCS is not the "magic bullet" solution to combat climate change, but the development of CCS technology represents a necessary step in reducing Canada's emissions," said Dr. Dybwad.

For a second consecutive year, IPAC-CO2 contracted Insightrix Research, Inc. to conduct an online survey of Canadian residents. Survey responses were collected from 1,550 Canadians between May 29 and June 11.

The percentage of Canadians who are unsure whether or not they would benefit from CCS has increased notably from 42% in 2011 to 48% in 2012.

Residents of Ontario are more likely to believe that it would (33%) benefit them, while in Quebec the reverse is true, where 30% believe they would not benefit from the technology.

The proportion of Canadians who are unsure of the effectiveness of carbon capture and storage has increased notably from one quarter (24%) in 2011 to one third (35%) in 2012.

Despite the concerns many Canadians have about the technology, Dr. Dybwad remains optimistic about the future of CCS and its impact on Canada's environment.

"Canadians are concerned about the risks and benefits involved with CCS, but IPAC-CO2 exists to ensure that carbon dioxide is stored safely and permanently in the ground by providing risk and performance assessments of carbon dioxide storage projects."

The 2012 survey on Public Awareness and Acceptance of CSS in Canada now is available on IPAC-CO2's website at: www.ipac-co2.com/research
