Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

The hip-hop team at MTV News has been all about Trae tha Truth this past week. Maybe we're still riding off the high from the Street King hooking up with the King of the South and signing a joint venture with T.I.'s Grand Hustle Records. Whatever the reason, Trae's King of the Streets: Freestyles mixtape has been banging through the News office, but that's not all.

There have been quite a few tapes — some new, some old — we're just getting hip to that have caught our ear.

» 8Ball, Premro: The Fat Mack is back. Since the early 1990s, Ball and MJG have been putting it down for the South. With his place as a hip-hop legend firmly cemented, 8Ball drops Premro just to prove that he isn't resting on his laurels. With production from Drumma Boy and features from the likes of Waka Flocka, 2 Chainz and Bun B, 8Ball proves he's still got it.

» Curren$y and Styles P, #The1st28: Can't say we saw this one coming, but on their collaborative #The1st28, Curren$y and Styles P are smokin'. Short but sweet, the five-song free EP features addictive music from the New Orleans Spitta and the LOX veteran — enough to keep fans hooked until the next 28.

» Don Trip, Guerrilla: Fresh off his XXL Freshman cover appearance, Memphis, Tennessee's Don Trip wasted no time capitalizing off the look with his Guerrilla mixtape. The 17-track DJ Drama-hosted tape is filled with Trip's brand of raw rap and never lets up.

» Eldorado Red, McRado's 2: You might be unfamiliar with Atlanta representative Eldorado Red, but McRado's 2 is an excellent start for newcomers. Eldorado's unapologetic brand of trap music makes him one to watch in the coming year.

» Short Dawg, The Adventures of Drankenstein: Young Money's rap roster runs deep. Short Dawg might not be the most celebrated of Weezy's crew, but his 2011 The Adventures of Drankenstein was a slept-on gem. On the H-Town-inspired tape, Dawg employs his melodic raps over an array of slow-rolling lean beats.
