Truck smashes through wall of Ilford OAP's living ... - BBC World News

A 76-year-old woman was watching TV at her home in Ilford, Essex, when a truck ploughed into her house ? leaving her with a minor head injury from flying debris. Structural engineers worked through the night to ensure the house would not collapse following the accident (Picture: Archant) The woman, who has not been named, was left badly shaken and taken by ambulance to Queen?s Hospital in Romford. Witness Kevin Carr said he was driving behind the truck on Eastern Avenue in Ilford when it struck a parked BMW and veered across the road into oncoming traffic. Pulling over after the lorry hit the house, Mr Carr said he feared the occupant may have been killed. ?It just unfolded in front of you like a film,? he said. ?It went into oncoming traffic. It was amazing they all managed to miss him.? After checking there was no one inside the BMW he headed into the house, adding: ?It was like slow motion. ?Me and another driver ran over to the house and the man in the truck was able to talk. ?Someone was calling out, but I didn?t understand what she was saying and I thought she was under the truck.? Mr Carr climbed through the huge hole made by the truck in the front wall of the house and led the traumatised pensioner out through the front door. A fire brigade spokesman said: ?I think she was indoors watching TV when it happened. We got the driver out of the cab using a ladder. He just wiggled his way out.? The driver, a man in his 50s, was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone with a hand injury.
