New Designers 2012 brings together 3,500 newly graduated design students and their inventions. The bike, toilet and energy management system are on display at the Brighton University stand, where sustainable design graduates seek backers to commercialise their products.

Hamish Glover-Wilson is the brains behind PowerFall, a system that encourages workers to use less energy via colour changing devices placed around the office. It also has a desktop application with real time energy statistics and advice and performance pages. The system allows companies to compare energy use by department or building, or against other firms in their sector. Up-to-the minute energy statistics can also be added automatically to email signatures or company literature, according to Glover-Wilson.

"It makes the energy manager or sustainability manager's job that much easier if everyone is engaged," he told edie.net. "The element of competition between colleagues or departments helps drive engagement, which drives action, which in turn generates results."

Firms subject to the government's carbon tax in particular would benefit from the system, he added.

Visit stand P14 at the Business Design Centre, Islington, from 4-7 July to learn more.
