In more than two decades of coaching, Monroe-Woodbury girls' basketball coach Linda Trapani said she has received one technical foul. That's a credit to, among other things, Trapani's restraint, class and respect for the referees.
She expects the same from her players, period. The Orange County Basketball Officials Association has noticed Monroe-Woodbury's attitude on court, and has honored the Crusaders with the association's 2011-12 sportsmanship award. Washingtonville, coached by Todd Rose, took home the honor for the boys' team.
"I want my kids to go out play hard and keep their heads," Trapani said. "We really don't let them trash talk or anything like that. We're not screamers as coaches and our players aren't screamers. It's nice to know that the referees respect us, it's an honor."
The voting for the award is conducted by more than 120 referees and honors a program's varsity and jayvee teams. The Washingtonville boys' team will be honored against Minisink Valley on Wednesday.
Monroe-Woodbury will be presented with its award before its showdown with Newburgh Free Academy on Thursday in Central Valley.
"I actually had Monroe-Woodbury when they lost to Newburgh the last time," said association president George Coates, "and you didn't hear one word from Monroe-Woodbury's coaches or players. Linda does a great job, and Todd Rose has a class act at Washingtonville. He has a talented team, they are fun to watch and they are under control. There is never a problem."
