Early-life traffic-related air pollution exposure linked to hyperactivity

May 21, 2013 ? Early-life exposure to traffic-related air pollution was significantly associated with higher hyperactivity scores at age 7, according to new research from the University of Cincinnati (UC) and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

The research is detailed in a study being published Tuesday, May 21, in Environmental Health Perspectives, a peer-reviewed open access journal published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), an institute within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The research was conducted by faculty members from the UC College of Medicine's Department of Environmental Health in collaboration with Cincinnati Children's. Nicholas Newman, DO, director of the Pediatric Environmental Health and Lead Clinic at Cincinnati Children's, was the study's first author.

"There is increasing concern about the potential effects of traffic-related air pollution on the developing brain," Newman says. "This impact is not fully understood due to limited epidemiological studies.

"To our knowledge, this is the largest prospective cohort with the longest follow-up investigating early life exposure to traffic-related air pollution and neurobehavioral outcomes at school age." Scientists believe that early life exposures to a variety of toxic substances are important in the development of problems later in life.

Newman and his colleagues collected data on traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) from the Cincinnati Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study (CCAAPS), a long-term epidemiological study examining the effects of traffic particulates on childhood respiratory health and allergy development. Funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, CCAAPS is led by Grace LeMasters, PhD, of the environmental health department. Study participants -- newborns in the Cincinnati metropolitan area from 2001 through 2003 -- were chosen based on family history and their residence being either near or far from a major highway or bus route.

Children were followed from infancy to age 7, when parents completed the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, 2nd Edition (BASC-2), assessing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related symptoms including attention problems, aggression, conduct problems and atypical behavior. Of the 762 children initially enrolled in the study, 576 were included in the final analysis at 7 years of age.

Results showed that children who were exposed to the highest third amount of TRAP during the first year of life were more likely to have hyperactivity scores in the "at risk" range when they were 7 years old. The "at risk" range for hyperactivity in children means that they need to be monitored carefully because they are at risk for developing clinically important symptoms.

"Several biological mechanisms could explain the association between hyperactive behaviors and traffic-related air pollution," Newman says, including narrowed blood vessels in the body and toxicity in the brain's frontal cortex.

Newman notes that the higher air pollution exposure was associated with a significant increase in hyperactivity only among those children whose mothers had greater than a high school education. Mothers with higher education may expect higher achievement, he says, affecting the parental report of behavioral concerns.

"The observed association between traffic-related air pollution and hyperactivity may have far-reaching implications for public health," Newman says, noting that studies have shown that approximately 11 percent of the U.S. population lives within 100 meters of a four-lane highway and that 40 percent of children attend school within 400 meters of a major highway.

"Traffic-related air pollution is one of many factors associated with changes in neurodevelopment, but it is one that is potentially preventable."

LeMasters, Patrick Ryan, PhD, Linda Levin, PhD, David Bernstein, MD, Gurjit Khurana Hershey, MD, PhD, James Lockey, PhD, Manuel Villareal, MD, Tiina Reponen, PhD, Sergey Grinshpun, PhD, Heidi Sucharew, PhD, and Kim Dietrich, PhD, were co-authors of the study.

Funding was provided by NIEHS and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

NASA Mars rover Curiosity drills second rock target

May 20, 2013 ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has used the drill on its robotic arm to collect a powdered sample from the interior of a rock called "Cumberland."

Plans call for delivering portions of the sample in coming days to laboratory instruments inside the rover. This is only the second time that a sample has been collected from inside a rock on Mars. The first was Curiosity's drilling at a target called "John Klein" three months ago. Cumberland resembles John Klein and lies about nine feet (2.75 meters) farther west. Both are within a shallow depression called "Yellowknife Bay."

The hole that Curiosity drilled into Cumberland on May 19 is about 0.6 inch (1.6 centimeters) in diameter and about 2.6 inches (6.6 centimeters) deep.

The science team expects to use analysis of material from Cumberland to check findings from John Klein. Preliminary findings from analysis of John Klein rock powder by Curiosity's onboard laboratory instruments indicate that the location long ago had environmental conditions favorable for microbial life. The favorable conditions included the key elemental ingredients for life, an energy gradient that could be exploited by microbes, and water that was not harshly acidic or briny.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to assess the history of habitable environmental conditions inside Gale Crater. After a few more high-priority observations by the rover within and near Yellowknife Bay, the rover team plans to start Curiosity on a months-long trek to the base of a layered mound, Mount Sharp, at the middle of the crater. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio are joing "The X Factor."

"X Factor" judge Simon Cowell is completely outnumbered. Fox announced Monday night that two more women are joining the competition's judging panel for the show's third season. Former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland and Latin pop singer Paulina Rubio will be sitting with the acerbic Brit and returning judge Demi Lovato this fall.

"Paulina and Kelly both have great taste and massive experience in the music industry and together with Demi, this is going to be a fun panel. It just feels like the time to do something different," Cowell said in a statement.

This is the second judging change for the singing competition. Original judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger were let go after the first season, and L.A Reid left the show after the second season. Britney Spears also exited after only one year in the show's sophomore season, leaving two seats open for season three.

"I am very excited to be reuniting with Simon Cowell and 'The X Factor' family,? said Rowland in a statement. ?It feels great to be able to take this journey here at home in the states!? The singer participated in season eight of the U.K. version of the show.

Just last month, FOX confirmed that Mario Lopez would be returning to host, while Khloe Kardashian was out.

Season three of "X Factor" returns this fall on FOX.

Cannes: where celebrity sells and celebrities sell

By Belinda Goldsmith

CANNES (Reuters) - Film stars come to Cannes to promote themselves and their projects - so where better to launch a wry documentary bemoaning the seeming dominance of celebrity pulling-power over content?

With parties, pitching and paparazzi already in overdrive at the world's premier movie market, director James Toback on Sunday showed "Seduced and Abandoned", the story of how he and actor Alec Baldwin talked to directors, investors and studio heads at Cannes last year to seek funding for a film with no A-list star.

They never intended to make the film, but its seemingly bankable plot about a spy and a journalist in Iraq turned out to be no compensation for its lack of big names.

Baldwin himself was dismissed as a mere television actor, and the female star, Canada's Neve Campbell, star of the "Scream" films, was said to have little box office power.

"Money follows stars," says Toback in the documentary, acquired by Time Warner's HBO.

As well as being the world's top cinema showcase, Cannes brings together up to 40,000 professionals to buy and sell films and seek funding for projects, but many of these never see a film.

One investor tells Toback that he doesn't even read scripts but decides whether to back a project based on the stars involved, as the marketing of a movie has become more important than its content.

Small wonder, then, that the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake and Emma Watson are not merely promoting finished movies showing in the 12-day Cannes festival, but also taking advantage of the limelight to talk up their new projects and seek distributors.

CELEBRITY AS SUBJECT

And Baldwin and Toback are not the only ones taking celebrity and its occupational hazards as their subject.

Former "Baywatch" star David Hasselhoff, 60, was in town with his 32-year-old girlfriend Hayley Robert to promote "Killing Hasselhoff", his yet-to-be-shot film about a man who hires a hitman to kill a celebrity - Hasselhoff himself - to win money in a bet.

Paris Hilton, never shy of publicity, attended a party for Sofia Coppola's film "The Bling Ring", premiered in Cannes, in which she plays a cameo role as a gang of celebrity-obsessed teen burglars break into their idols' homes, including Hilton's house.

DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese announced their next movie venture, "Silence", while Timberlake and his wife Jessica Biel held a disco-themed party for buyers of "Spinning Gold", their planned biopic of record executive Neil Bogart.

Jennifer Lawrence, who won the Oscar this year for best actress, was working the floors with Australian actor Liam Hemsworth to promote the second and third "Hunger Games" movies, which start shooting in September.

Kung Fu star Jackie Chan rolled in with China's big screen darling Fan Bingbing talking about next year's comedy action film, "Skiptrace".

Elsewhere, actresses Liv Tyler, Jane Fonda and Eva Longoria, models Cindy Crawford and Cara Delevingne and pop singer and DJ Boy George were among those partying and pressing flesh around Cannes to talk up their projects, or merely using their celebrity status to be "brand ambassadors".

Beyond promoting films and careers, Cannes does provide at least a few occasions to put celebrity to more altruistic use.

Sharon Stone, Jessica Chastain, and Janet Jackson are all on the guest list for Thursday's annual amfAR gala to raise money for AIDS research, where the bill of performers includes Shirley Bassey and Duran Duran.

Pinterest adds more data to your boards with rich pins

Pinterest is already an absurdly popular way to save stuff from around the web, be it shoes you love, accessories for your bridesmaids or decorations for your man cave. One thing the social-bookmarking service has been missing, however, is context. Now it's offering a way for companies to deliver more info, through metadata attached to particular types of pages. Rich pins, as they're being called, can automatically attach price and availability to a product, or ingredient lists to recipes. There are also movie pins, which let sites attach ratings and credits to films. Pinterest has lined up an impressive list of partners to help it launch the new feature, including Netflix, Etsy, ASOS, REI, The North Face, Modcloth, Bon Appetit, Epicurious and Real Simple. All your old pins that now have contextual data will automatically be updated (which you'll be able to identify thanks to icons below them), and you can check out some example boards at the source link.

Bakery offers fresh slice of real estate | Daily Liberal

THE OWNERS?of a "long-established and popular" Dubbo bakery are part-way along a project to add two storeys of offices to the lot.

They expect construction of a 1900 square metre-expansion at 113 Darling Street, adjoining the Village Bakery Cafe, to be completed by late August.

The Stevenson family started works on the site - once touted as a home for greengrocer Harris Farm Markets - after gaining development approval from Dubbo City Council in February.

And as the landmark gains a fresh appearance, the owners are also searching for tenants or buyers.

They have offered three units of the five-lot subdivision for lease or sale, listing them with real estate agency Andrew McDonald Commercial Dubbo.

The works and listing mark a new era for the site, and comes after the earlier relocation of the bakery's back-room activity to a larger facility in Mountbatten Drive.

Stevenson family spokesman Mark Stanford confirmed they were building 1900 square metres of "premium office space" with a new car park and landscaping.

He anticipated construction would be completed by late August and that it would make the streetscape attractive.

"The Village Bakery Cafe will also be repainted and have a new outdoor playground and alfresco eating area," he said.

"The building has been architecturally designed by local firm Geolyse and the new building has been designed to tie into the existing building with the four large architectural parapets."

Agent Andrew McDonald said it was not unusual to offer premises for sale or lease and it provided flexibility.

They had received occasional inquiries and were following up with one or two parties but had nothing definite for units 2, 3 and 5, Mr McDonald said.

The owners had already received a commitment for unit 4 on the first floor and the occupant of unit 1, the Village Bakery Cafe, was staying, he said.

"(The business) is long-established and popular," he said.

The agent has marketed the two-storey building as a "new office, medical or retail space".

"It's a big site and the owners are expanding on what they can build but they're being sensible on access and parking," Mr McDonald said.

"The finished article will have easy access, I'm sure it will shine when it's finished."

The draft of the most recent local environmental plan proposed the site as B6 Enterprise Corridor, but under the final version gazetted in 2011 it was zoned B3 Commercial Core.

This 18-Year-Old's Invention Could Make Your Future Phone Instacharge

While you are hanging out on the Internet (in your underwear, maybe?) on a Saturday, kids that are smarter than either you or I are out there getting ready to change the world. 18-year-old Eesha Khare (left), for instance, not only invented a supercapacitor that could someday be a phone battery that charges in just a couple of seconds; she also won $50,000 for it.

Khare is one of the three big winners from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. She and 17-year-old Henry Lin (right)?who created a model that simulates thousands of galaxies?picked up Intel Foundation Young Scientist Awards. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Ionut Budisteanu won the Gordon E. Moore Award and $75,000 for his AI model that could lead to a cheaper self-driving car. Khare's invention is the one with some really immediate potential though, and quick-charging phones is something we all want.

So far, the supercapcitor has only been tested to light up a LED, but it was able to do that wonderfully and the prototypes new format holds potential to be scaled. It's also flexible and tiny, and should be able to handle 10,000 recharge cycles, more than normal batteries by a factor of 10.

It's a great step in the right direction, especially since we all know that battery life is the most important feature a phone can have. But like all supercapcitor tech, it's not exactly close to commercial development yet. But hey, if a (admittedly super smart) 18-year-old can get this stuff figured out, multi-national corporations with an even bigger cash profit incentive on the table should be able to as well, right? Hurry up already. I'll take either solution so long as one comes soon. [Intel via NBC News]

Tunisia security blocks salafi conference

KAIROUAN, Tunisia (AP) ? Around 11,000 police officers and soldiers blocked an annual conference Sunday at Tunisia's main religious center by a radical Islamist movement that has been implicated in attacks across the country.

Security checkpoints were in place and patrols conducted throughout Kairouan after authorities declared the conference by ultraconservative Muslim group Ansar al-Shariah a threat "to security and public order."

Police briefly scuffled with stone-throwing young men and fired tear gas to disperse them.

The leader of Ansar al-Shariah, Seifallah Ben Hassine is wanted for his involvement in a mob attack on the U.S. Embassy in September and his followers have been accused of attacking art galleries, police stations and cinemas.

The robust response to the conference by security forces is unprecedented since the 2011 overthrow of President Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, who presided over a strong police state.

The government, led by the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party, has long been accused by the opposition of being lax with attacks by ultraconservative Muslims, called salafis, on what they deem to be impious in the country.

Ansar al-Shariah's combative rhetoric, however, appears to have united the country against it. In a national dialogue conference involving unions, civil society and political parties Thursday, Ansar al-Shariah was widely condemned. The discovery of al-Qaida-linked militants in mountains along the Algerian border also alarmed people.

Alaya Allami, an expert on Islamic movements in Tunisia, said Ansar al-Shariah's more aggressive stance had resulted in a backlash in society and isolated them further.

"The operation against terrorist groups in Jebel Chambi and the approach of elections has threatened these radical currents and caused them to try to impose themselves more on the social scene," he said.

The spokesman of Ansar al-Shariah, Seifeddine Rais, was detained by authorities Sunday morning and an attempt by hundreds of salafis to hold a rally in a lower income Tunisian suburb was also dispersed by tear gas.

Rais on Thursday said authorities would bear responsibility for any blood spilled if they tried to ban the conference.

Security has been high around Kairouan since Saturday, with police checking IDs and searching the cars of anyone entering the city.

Residents appeared to welcome the security and handed out roses to patrolling police, offering their encouragement.

Since the overthrow of Ben Ali in an uprising that heralded the region-wide Arab Spring, Tunisia's salafis have become increasingly aggressive about preaching their conservative version of Islam.

Last year's Ansar al-Shariah conference in Kairouan drew about 4,000 attendees and featured sword-waving horse riders and martial arts displays, along with a great deal of fiery rhetoric.

Edward Furlong arrested in West Hollywood

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A Los Angeles sheriff's spokesman says 'Terminator 2' star Edward Furlong has been arrested on suspicion of violating a restraining order filed by his ex-girlfriend.

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said that deputies responding to the scene Thursday in West Hollywood found Furlong hiding in a nearby property.

Jail records show he was released Saturday just after noon after being held on $100,000 bail.

In March, the 35-year-old actor had been sentenced to six months in jail for violating his probation in a 2010 case for violating a similar restraining order.

He has been the subject of such orders taken out by both his ex-wife and ex-girlfriend.

The actor was also charged in January of battery of an ex-girlfriend.

Powerball jackpot could go higher than $600M

By Karen Brooks

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - The Powerball jackpot Saturday night could exceed the $600 million figure being advertised, possibly rivaling the largest lottery payoff in U.S. history, a Texas Lottery official said on Saturday.

"Oftentimes, the advertised amount is lower than what the actual jackpot ends up being," said Kelly Cripe, a spokeswoman for the Texas Lottery. "It's entirely possible this $600 million jackpot will end up being a bigger jackpot."

Chances of winning the Powerball on Saturday were one in 175 million, Cripe said, but that did not deter people from buying up tickets at staggering rates. California was selling $1 million in tickets every hour on Saturday, said Donna Cordova, a spokeswoman for the California Lottery, which has only been selling Powerball tickets since April 8.

Texas Lottery officials reported $1.2 million in hourly sales between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. local time, with ticket sales for the Saturday draw topping $18.4 million.

The ticket sale rate on Saturday was nearly double Friday's rate, Cripe said, and a jump of some 686 percent over last Saturday.

The Powerball lottery, which has not had a winner in two months, is offered in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A Powerball lottery record was set in November with a $587.5 million jackpot that topped the $550 million figure that was advertised, thanks to last-minute sales.

The largest jackpot in U.S. history was the $656 million in the Mega Millions lottery in March 2012. That prize was split between winners in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois.

If Saturday's Powerball drawing yields no winner, all records will be shattered as the jackpot for Wednesday's drawing would go to $925 million.

Many Americans were playing the "if I win" game ahead of Saturday's drawing.

"If I win, I'm going to spend a lot of it on liquor, women and gambling," said Austin lawyer Donald Dickson. "I'll likely squander the rest of it."

In New York City, talent acquisition agent Michelle Amici was more philanthropic.

"Not sure that I'd buy anything," she said. "Rather, I'd attempt to quench my wanderlust by traveling the world. I'd also donate a large portion to education reform."

Lottery players such as Austin marketing professional Becky Arreaga was not discouraged by the long odds.

"As long as the odds are 1 in anything, I'm in," said Arreaga, a partner at Mercury Mambo marketing firm. "I truly believe I could be the one."

"It's only a couple bucks for a small daydream," said Russell Williams, 35, a salesman in Austin, Texas.

Bonnie Carreno of El Paso, Texas, rarely plays but was taking a chance on this one. "I only ever buy a ticket when I see the amazing numbers in the headlines," she said.

The $2 tickets allow players pick five numbers from 1 to 59, and a Powerball number from 1 to 35. The numbers will be drawn Saturday at 10:59 p.m. EDT (0259 GMT on Sunday) in Tallahassee, Florida.

After Google, Amazon to be grilled on UK tax presence

By Tom Bergin

LONDON (Reuters) - Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc. will be called back to the British parliament to clarify how its activities in the UK justify its low corporate income tax bill, two lawmakers told Reuters.

Amazon will follow search giant Google, which attended another grilling by parliament's Public Affairs Committee (PAC) over its tax affairs on Thursday. A Reuters report earlier this month raised questions over Google's earlier assertions that its UK-based staff don't sell to customers.

Over the past six years, Amazon has paid around $9 million in income tax on over $23 billion of sales to British clients, because it says it operates a single European business out of Luxembourg, rather than a multinational structure of independent subsidiaries in different countries, and should therefore pay tax in Luxembourg.

However, Reuters has uncovered evidence from the company's own statements, job advertisements, statements from three suppliers and five former employees, as well as the profiles of over 140 staff on networking website LinkedIn, which suggests the UK unit has a high degree of autonomy, with local managers deciding on many aspects of its business.

The information, collected during a three-month investigation, suggests that while Amazon depicts itself as a virtual business, its structure may not be so different from its bricks-and-mortar rivals.

"The basic business model wasn't very different to a mail order company in the 1970s or 80s," said Mark Riley, a Business Development Manager at Amazon.co.uk between 2005 and 2008.

Bryan Roberts, Retail Insights Director for consultants Kantar Retail, said apart from the fact buyers seal deals over the Internet, Amazon's UK unit Amazon.co.uk Ltd, which is based in an office block in Slough, near London, was essentially a UK retailer.

"Amazon.co.uk is a British business in that 99 percent of the people who are responsible for merchandising, buying, the online activity, fulfillment, are based in Slough," said Roberts, an expert who advises many Amazon suppliers.

Amazon declined to answer any questions about its UK business.

On Thursday, the Guardian newspaper reported that it had found "extensive UK activities" for Amazon that suggested the UK tax authority could be tougher on taxing its British operations.

Companies, especially those which sell over the Internet, increasingly designate their British subsidiary as a supplier of support services to an affiliate in a low-tax jurisdiction, through which sales are then booked. Firms including Expedia and Microsoft have used such arrangements to minimize tax bills while also employing people in a wide range of roles in Britain, their accounts, employee profiles on their web pages, job advertisements and the LinkedIn profiles of staff show.

Amazon and Microsoft say they follow tax law in every country where they operate. Expedia declined to comment.

The practice is based on international tax rules which allow companies to conduct "preparatory and auxiliary" activities in a country without creating a taxable presence there.

The UK tax authority, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), has never sought to define in court the limits of what an internet company can do in Britain before it is deemed to have a taxable presence. Lawyers and academics say this has allowed a wide grey area to emerge.

In the case of Amazon at least, some tax experts said that in conducting a wide range of activity in the UK, it may be on the wrong side of the hitherto undefined boundary.

Yet Jacques Sasseville, head of the tax treaty unit at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which advises rich nations on tax policy, said he wasn't sure if a boundary exists. He said where sales were conducted online, it was almost impossible to prove a taxable presence in a jurisdiction, irrespective of how much activity is conducted in that country.

Member of Parliament Margaret Hodge said she wanted HMRC to look more closely at the company's affairs, to see if Amazon was paying all the tax it should.

She also said she planned to call Amazon representatives back to testify to the committee which she chairs and clarify written evidence and witness testimony the firm gave in November, in which it downplayed its activities in Britain.

"We need to very urgently call back Amazon to question them around what you've uncovered; to look at that in relation to what they actually told us when they gave evidence to us and of course if they were economical with the truth or not totally honest in their evidence to us last time, that is a very serious thing," she said.

Amazon declined to say whether staff at Amazon.co.uk had management oversight or were responsible for profitability for different retail product lines. Amazon's auditor Ernst and Young declined to comment.

FULFILMENT

Amazon.co.uk is funded by fees from Amazon EU, which are just enough to cover its costs but leave little profit to tax. It employs 4,191 full-time staff and thousands more contract staff via outside firms, compared with 500 Amazon staff in Luxembourg.

Amazon.co.uk's principal activity is "the provision of fulfillment and corporate support services to other group undertakings", according to its 2012 accounts.

Amazon's Brussels-based Director of Public Policy, Andrew Cecil, told the committee in November that the UK unit did not operate as an independent business.

"We are operating a single European company ... All the strategic functions for our business in Europe are based in Luxembourg," he said.

Amazon said in subsequent written testimony to the Public Affairs Committee that the UK's roles included customer support, accountancy, tax, legal, human resources, localization and similar back office services; merchandising and marketing support services; and purchasing assistance.

Amazon supplier Gary Braithwaite, who helps manage the Amazon relationship at Elland, North of England-based organic and vegan food distributor Suma Wholefoods, said his cooperative has had no dealings at all with Amazon in Luxembourg, but works with its UK staff.

"We actually deal directly with them. Every so often we go down to visit them in Slough. They're really nice people," he said.

The employment section of Amazon's own corporate website says: "Our Slough teams manage all corporate functions, including vendor management, marketing, software development and legal."

In late March, the careers section of the website advertised dozens of Slough-based jobs in these categories.

A "Senior Vendor Manager - Beauty" with Amazon.co.uk was expected to "Seek out, engage, motivate and build new and existing supplier partnerships," while prospective candidates for Senior Vendor Manager - Mobile Communications were told the job would require them to "Manage existing supplier relationships maximizing sales, market segment share and profitability."

Some former staff said UK-based managers had responsibility for the profitability of product categories. This started with negotiating the best deals with suppliers.

Matt Henderson, who worked in a variety of managerial roles at Amazon from 2004 to 2011, said that little, if any, purchasing occurred on an international level because even international suppliers preferred to deal with Amazon on a national basis, partly to moderate the company's ability to squeeze discounts from them.

Some UK-based managers also had to decide on product pricing, constantly seeking to balance margin against volumes, and decide how products were displayed online.

"The UK front page was owned by the UK category manager," said the former business development manager Riley.

The LinkedIn profiles of current and former staff show employees closely involved in driving profitability at Amazon's UK business.

Aimee-Joanne Teather, Buyer - Kids Clothing & Accessories, said her responsibilities included "Signing new brands, negotiating terms with vendors. Analyzing sales figures and reaching targets."

Teather did not respond to requests for comment.

PREPARATORY OR AUXILIARY

The issue, say lawyers, is one of 'substance'. Amazon UK is a subsidiary of Amazon EU, the official supplier of Amazon goods across Europe.

It pays almost all its profit to a tax-exempt affiliate, also registered in Luxembourg, in fees for the use of Amazon group intellectual property.

The tax authorities in the United States and France have each demanded hundreds of millions of dollars in back taxes from Amazon in relation to this arrangement, Amazon's regulatory filings show. U.S. authorities have argued the price at which Amazon transferred intellectual property between affiliates was inappropriate; Amazon did not specify the French tax authority's objections.

Amazon EU can sell into Britain from Luxembourg without creating a taxable presence because, like most developed countries, the two have a treaty aimed at avoiding double-taxation of profits. That lets its home base Luxembourg collect the taxes instead, said David Quentin, at law firm Farrer & Company, after reviewing the Reuters material.

International tax law deems storage as ?auxiliary' to the main trade of a manufacturer or retailer, so Amazon's vast warehouses, which it calls fulfillment centers, do not create a permanent establishment.

That works up to a point, lawyers say. Amazon EU's activities in Britain do not constitute a taxable entity known as a permanent establishment so long as they are of a "preparatory or auxiliary character".

"If a UK company is conducting the operations from which the profits in substance arise, HMRC could seek to treat the trade as being conducted through the UK company and tax it here," Quentin said.

Whatever the legal situation, Amazon is likely to face tough questions when it appears again in front of lawmakers in coming weeks.

"We will take a much closer look at their internal financial arrangements," said member of parliament Nick Smith, who also sits on the PAC. "Whilst they will be shown every courtesy, Amazon had better put on their tin hats." ($1 = 0.6568 British pounds)

SKorea says NKorea fires 3 short-range missiles

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea fired three short-range guided missiles into its eastern waters on Saturday, a South Korean official said. It routinely tests such missiles, but the latest launches came during a period of tentative diplomacy aimed at easing tensions.

The North fired two missiles Saturday morning and another in the afternoon, South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said by phone. He said the North's intent was unclear. His ministry said it is watching North Korea carefully in case it conducts a provocation against South Korea.

In March, North Korea launched what appeared to be two KN-02 missiles off its east coast. Experts believe the country is trying to improve the range and accuracy of its arsenal.

North Korea recently withdrew two mid-range "Musudan" missiles believed to be capable of reaching Guam after moving them to its east coast earlier this year, U.S. officials said. The North is banned from testing ballistic missiles under U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Earlier this year, North Korea threatened nuclear strikes on Seoul and Washington because of annual U.S.-South Korean military drills and U.N. sanctions imposed over its third nuclear test in February. The drills ended late last month. This past month, the U.S. and South Korea ended another round of naval drills involving a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier off the east coast. North Korea calls such drills preparation to invade the North.

Analysts say the recent North Korean threats were partly an attempt to push Washington to agree to disarmament-for-aid talks.

This past week, Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy on North Korea, ended trips to South Korea, China and Japan. On Friday, an adviser to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe returned from North Korea but didn't immediately give details of his talks with officials there.

On Monday, North Korean state media showed that the country's hard-line defense minister had been replaced by a little-known army general. Outside analysts said it was part of leader Kim Jong Un's efforts to tighten his grip on the powerful military after his father Kim Jong Il died in December 2011.

The United States and Japan are participants in six-nation nuclear disarmament talks along with the Koreas, Russia and China. North Korea walked out of the talks in 2009 after the United Nations condemned it for a long-range rocket launch.

North Korea possesses an array of missiles. U.S. and South Korean officials do not believe the North's claim that it has developed nuclear warheads small enough to place on a missile. Last week in Washington, South Korean President Park Geun-hye and President Barack Obama warned North Korea against further nuclear provocations.

Tension between the two Koreas remains high after both sides pulled out their workers from a jointly run factory complex earlier this year. The countries remain technically at war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce instead of a peace treaty.

New study recommends using active videogaming ('exergaming') to improve children's health

May 17, 2013 ? Levels of physical inactivity and obesity are very high in children, with fewer than 50% of primary school-aged boys and fewer than 28% of girls meeting the minimum levels of physical activity required to maintain health. Exergaming, using active console video games that track player movement to control the game (e.g., Xbox-Kinect, Wii), has become popular, and may provide an alternative form of exercise to counteract sedentary behaviors. In a study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers studied the effects of exergaming on children.

Dr. Louise Naylor and researchers from The University of Western Australia, Liverpool John Moores University, and Swansea University evaluated 15 children, 9-11 years of age, who participated in 15 minutes each of high intensity exergaming (Kinect Sports -- 200m Hurdles), low intensity exergaming (Kinect Sports -- Ten Pin Bowling), and a graded exercise test (treadmill). The researchers measured energy expenditure. They also measured the vascular response to each activity using flow-mediated dilation (FMD), which is a validated measure of vascular function and health in children.

They found that high intensity exergaming elicited an energy expenditure equivalent to moderate intensity exercise; low intensity exergaming resulted in an energy expenditure equivalent to low intensity exercise. Additionally, although the low intensity exergaming did not have an impact on FMD, high intensity exergaming significantly decreased FMD, suggesting that the latter may improve vascular health in children. High intensity exergaming also increased heart rate and the amount of energy burned. Participants reported similar enjoyment levels with both intensities of exergaming, which indicates that children may be equally likely to continue playing the high intensity games.

According to Dr. Naylor, "Higher intensity exergaming may be a good form of activity for children to use to gain long-term and sustained health benefits." These findings also support the growing notion that high intensity activity is beneficial for children's health, and high intensity exergaming should be considered a means of encouraging children to become more active.

Check Out This Solid Video Marketing Advice | MySpareTime.net

One of the newest ways for businesses to effectively market their business is through the use of videos. Given the rapid pace of the modern Internet, it is possible to download content faster than ever before. Use videos to your advantage, and find out more about them in this piece.

Have a screenshot of the website you run in your videos. This lets viewers become a little more familiar with it. How-to videos can also incorporate screenshots. All you have to do is utilize a software program that allows you to edit videos.

Great titles are an excellent addition to already-great media during any online marketing campaign. A title that?s powerful and relevant to the video will draw people to it. A really good title can help to draw curious viewers in. You should make the titles of your videos eyecatching.

Video marketing is characterized by the short period in which you must grab the attention of viewers. The first 10 to 15 seconds of each video should be the strongest. Teasers and other attention getters work great here.

Don?t overlook YouTube. You should start all of your video marketing efforts on this site. You get free video hosting. They also are visited the third most out of every website there is. This is the second most trafficked online search engine, not to mention the best-loved video site.

If your customers have a hard time using your product, make a video explaining how to do so. On one hand, you will have cleared up any problems and potential customer service issues. On the other hand, you will present a strong and favorable image of your company that is sure to appeal to potential customers.

Your content must be engaging. Provide only content that is relevant, valuable and entertaining or informative. You may be able to boost your views with a video hosting site, but it won?t really work out if you have boring videos. Viewers expect videos that are interesting and helpful, not boring advertising. The surest way to build a subscriber base quickly is to make interesting videos.

Talk to your colleagues and seek their assistance in helping your video marketing ideas. You need to have articulate people who represent the business. Having a variety of people in your videos can make them more interesting.

You have to consistently post fresh content in order for visitors to keep returning. Boring content does nothing except repel viewers, and that is not good for business. Your viewers should be wanting more at the end of each video. If you have really interesting content, more people will want to watch it.

Most individuals appreciate honesty. If you are going to make a video, make a video about something that you are truly interested in or believe in. Stay natural and authentic in order to have more success with your intended client base.

A personal connection with customers can be built through video marketing. Video taping the effort that goes into making your products will give consumers a behind-the-scenes look at your operations that they?ll appreciate. People will like to see that there?s a more personal side to the business you run.

Once you?ve collected data from statistics and comments on your videos, make another video! The data will allow you to make better videos by telling you what content to work on and helping you decide what equipment to use to increase quality.

Be ready to moderate comments to any marketing video that you upload to YouTube. A lot of viewers base their opinions on the comments of others, and seeing lots of negative or offensive comments could be disastrous for your campaign. You can also disable the comments section entirely if you are not able to moderate the feedback.

Don?t just post on YouTube, also include the video on your site, too. That way, more people will see it. This is a great way to expose your video to many different viewers.

Do not fret about perfection. You don?t need state-of-the-art equipment to market with video. Most of the time all you have to do is put some good software on your computer. You can even use your smartphone! As long as you provide information that is valuable, people will watch your videos.

In order to get more videos on your site, think about having a contest. It can be something serious or even something goofy like a dance or joke! Seeing other customers using your product is an excellent way to garner new customers.

Don?t make your videos appear like advertisements. Your viewers can lose interest in videos that are nothing more than sales pitches. You want to give people something that they can use.

You need to include a friendly greeting with each customer engagement. Tell them what you?re about and what your business does first. Also, end your videos with a friendly sign-off, and repeat your name and the name of the business.

It isn?t all that hard to start video marketing. You just need to devote sufficient time to learning about it. After doing that, then your marketing strategy will be successful. Now, you can make a video and start promoting your business.

'Endless Love' remake seduces rising stars Rhys Wakefield and Emma Rigby

By Jeff Sneider

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Rising stars Rhys Wakefield and Emma Rigby have joined the cast of Universal Pictures' remake of romantic drama "Endless Love."

Shana Feste ("Country Strong") is directing the film, which stars Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde as teenage lovers from opposite backgrounds.

Bruce Greenwood and Robert Patrick play Wilde and Pettyfer's fathers, respectively.

Wakefield will play Wilde's older brother who is under pressure to live up to the legacy of his late older brother.

Scott Stuber and Pam Abdy of Bluegrass Films are producing "Endless Love" with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Fake Empire. J. Miles Dale and Tracy Falco are executive producing.

Josh Safran wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay, which has since been rewritten by Feste. Kristin Lowe and Chloe Yellin are overseeing the project for Universal.

Wakefield is quickly becoming a favorite on the Universal lot, as he also stars in its home invasion thriller "The Purge," which hits theaters on June 7. He previously starred in their studio's 2011 thriller "Sanctum," which was executive produced by James Cameron. The Australian actor just wrapped "Rita," Miguel Arteta's Bravo pilot starring Anna Gunn, and he'll also be seen in the indie movie "The Philosophers."

Rigby starred on the hit Brit series "Hollyoaks" and has appeared on the BBC America series "Ripper Street." She recently wrapped the indie movie "The Physician" and will soon be seen as the Red Queen on ABC's "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland."

Wakefield is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content and Sloane, Offer, Weber, and Dern, while Rigby is repped by WME, Alan Siegel Entertainment and Independent Talent Group.

Former O.J. Simpson attorney refutes testimony

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? The lawyer who unsuccessfully defended O.J. Simpson against armed robbery charges testified Friday his client knew two companions had guns in a 2007 confrontation with memorabilia dealers.

Miami attorney Yale Galanter contradicted much of Simpson's earlier testimony while under questioning at a hearing in which his former client is seeking a new trial on grounds of ineffective legal representation.

Galanter testified the former football hero confided to him that he had indeed asked two men to bring guns to the hotel room confrontation and "he knew he screwed up."

Galanter hesitated and spoke only after he paused, breathed deeply and was reminded that Simpson had waived attorney-client privilege.

"I'm very uncomfortable doing this," Galanter said.

He said that based on conversations with Simpson, his then-client had asked the two others to bring guns.

"He said, 'The other guys had guns and I didn't,'" Galanter said.

On the basis of that, Galanter said he made the decision not to claim at trial that Simpson couldn't see the guns in the hotel room.

"To argue that he had tunnel vision and didn't see these guns was absurd to me," Galanter said.

Simpson and his new lawyers, Patricia Palm and Ozzie Fumo, allege that Galanter botched the trial over the hotel room incident, which involved two memorabilia dealers and five Simpson pals, including two who testified they brought guns.

A decision on Simpson's retrial bid will be made by District Court Judge Linda Marie Bell. She has not indicated whether she will rule immediately after testimony or take the issue under advisement.

Testifying about events prior to the hotel room incident, Galanter said he was surprised when Simpson told him over dinner at a Las Vegas hotel that he and several other men were planning a "sting" to take back items he believed had been stolen from him in Los Angeles.

Galanter said he advised against it.

"He said he and some of his boys were planning a sting in the morning," Galanter said.

Under questioning by H. Leon Simon, attorney for the state, Galanter said Simpson mentioned the sting plan while they were having dinner with several other people at Simpson's hotel the night before. Galanter said he was in town on another, unspecified, legal case and he met with his longtime client to catch up as friends.

Galanter denied giving Simpson the go-ahead to try to retrieve personal items ? a key contention among Simpson's 19 claims of ineffective assistance of counsel and conflict of interest.

"When he first mentioned it, it just went over my head," Galanter said of Simpson's plan. "About a minute or two later, I leaned over and said, 'What are you talking about? What are you doing?'

"He told me he finally had a lead on some personal pictures and memorabilia that was stolen from him years earlier," Galanter testified. "I said, 'O.J., you've got to call the police.'"

According to Simpson, Galanter advised the former football star that it was his legal right to retrieve personal items; told Simpson not to testify at the trial; failed to tell Simpson that prosecutors offered plea deals; and failed to raise the issue of ineffective assistance of counsel on appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court.

Palm and Fumo have said they didn't need Galanter to testify for Simpson. They said written briefs, bolstered this week by testimony from 12 witnesses, have provided compelling evidence that Simpson deserves a new trial.

Another Simpson lawyer joined the legal team Friday. Tom Pitaro, a veteran Las Vegas trial attorney known for witheringly direct and insistent questioning, cross-examined Galanter.

Pitaro sparred verbally with Galanter over financial aspects of the case, including fees paid to Gabe Grasso, a Nevada lawyer Galanter had brought in to assist.

"Gabe says you paid him $15,000. You say you paid him $25,000," Pitaro said. "He says you promised to pay him $250,000."

"That never happened," Galanter said.

During one objection, the judge invited Pitaro to tell where he was going with his questions.

"What Mr. Galanter has done is, this man has received over a half-million dollars and has put his interest, his financial interest, above the interest of his client," Pitaro said.

Since Monday, the Simpson hearing on a writ of habeas corpus has revolved around Galanter ? his promises, payments and performance in the trial that sent Simpson to prison for nine to 33 years for armed robbery and kidnapping.

Simpson maintains that he didn't know anyone in the hotel room had guns, and that he had a right to the items he was after ? football mementos, awards, photos and personal items that he said were stolen from him while he was moving out of his Los Angeles home.

The move followed Simpson's "trial of the century" acquittal in the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife and her friend, and a 1997 civil judgment that ordered him to pay $33.5 million to the estates of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

"I talked to Yale about it two or three times," Simpson said during his testimony Wednesday. "The overall advice he was giving was, 'You have a right to get your stuff.'"

Germany's uncomfortable role as Europe's 'economic police'

Since World War II, Germany has preferred to stay out of international leadership roles. But the eurocrisis has put the country at Europe's head ? with all the criticism that entails.

Germans in the postwar era, on the other hand, have preferred to blend into the background.

But amid Europe's sovereign debt crisis, as Germany's healthy economy has put it at the head of the 27-member European Union, that's been proving impossible. And now Germans are dealing with the criticism that accompanies being a regional ? if unwilling ? hegemon.

While a recent Pew poll shows Germany to be considered by many countries to be the most trustworthy nation in Europe, it has also accrued new enemies far and wide, with Greeks burning German flags or picketing with signs of German Chancellor Angela Merkel dressed in Nazi uniform. There have even been?claims from France that Germans are out to rule the Continent.

?We have made a lot of commitment to help those people,? says Markus, a musical theater stage producer, in Berlin?s Alexanderplatz, a public square and major transportation hub in Germany?s capital Berlin. ?It?s really unfair.?

It?s also untrue ? at least the part about Germany wanting continental dominion, say German and European observers. Instead, the avoidance of tough positions in foreign policy, so Germany is not led into a moral dilemma, is ingrained in the postwar mentality, they say.

?There is no appetite for domination. Germany has been pushed into this position by default,? says Jan Techau, director of Carnegie Europe in Brussels for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. ?There is no ambition to shape the continent in the image of Germany.?

?Germans want to be liked by the rest of the world,? says Michael Wohlgemuth, director of Open Europe Berlin. ?Germany feels uneasy in its new powerful role. We don?t want to be leaders of Europe.?

Outside the US embassy in Berlin, Erkan Arikan says that Germany is being unfairly maligned in Europe. But he says he can also laugh it off, as a German of Turkish descent in a multicultural Germany that has nothing to do with the 1930s.

He says that he can see some parallels between the hegemonic positions of Germany and the US today, but there is a limit. ?The US is still the world police for everyone; Germany doesn?t want to be the focus,? he says. ?But maybe it?s becoming the economic police of Europe.?

It?s a role that many Germans might feel uncomfortable playing, especially with the bad will that can breed.

If Americans don?t like the term ?ugly American,? Germans like it even less.

Ulrike Gu?rot of the European Council of Foreign Relations says when she travels around the country and talks to everyday Germans, they are starting to ask, ?Are we responsible for this youth unemployment in Spain? There is an uneasiness they they are just starting to feel,? she says. ?They don?t want to be the ?ugly German.??

The Jolie Seem Is In Top Augmentation ? Shopping and Product ...

?

Total lush mouth are becoming ever more popular, thanks to The show biz industry movie stars. Your Angelina Jolie look is in, plus more women are searhing for lip development. Collagen offers, for the greatest time, taken claim since the leading realtor used for lip enhancement. Even so, results are non permanent, and so long lasting lip augmentation have been developed.

?

The implant consists of material designed specifically for your safe and effective development of soft muscle, such as lip area. One example of this would be the restylane injections. The product also comes in different sizes as well as shapes to fit each patient?s certain needs, in addition to desires, in a very perfectly sterile package made for only one solitary use. The particular surgical strategy is performed in the sterile fashion. Like a lot of cosmetic surgical procedures nowadays, top augmentation is completed by using really precise ways to increase the successful appearance with the insert, and also minimize recovery time. This combination is the best for anyone considering cosmetic surgery.

?

There are literally hundreds of improvements for different top shapes, dimensions, and width. Since every person has a different mouth area, and a distinct desired search, there have to be just as many choices to meet each of the demands. The best way to figure out which implant is right for you is to meet with the physician, describe just what look you?re seeking (be as specific as is possible, every detail are only able to help the selection process), then see precisely what he/she suggests. Not like collagen, these kind of implants are generally permanent, but when you have the surgical procedure and for a number of reason are usually unsatisfied along with how it seems, lip augmentations are generally simple enough to remove without threat of problems. For any concern with scarring: remember that the cuts are made no more than possible inside the lips, therefore there may be very tiny marks, these are on your own lips, which can make them even more undetectable.

?

?

?

An obvious question arises: is there any change in sensation? The answer is indeed, but only ahead of time during the time to recover. It is not strange for a individual to really feel some numbness, maybe slight tingling, but over time your current lips can return to typical. And no, the implant is not detectable any time kissing. In case you press your fingers very trying to your lip area you might glance at the implant, may well being the main element word.

?

Complications are uncommon for this process, though they do exist. Your current specialist will be able to give you the entire list. In the event the Angelina Jolie seem is the one particular you?re looking for, and you?re tired of duplicate treatments, this could very well be the remedy you?re looking for.
