BEIJING (AP) ? During China's last party congress, the cadres in charge of the world's most populous nation didn't know a hashtag from a hyperlink. But five years on, there's a new message from Beijing: The political transition will be microblogged.

Party officials have this fall embraced social media with unprecedented enthusiasm, hoping it can help guide public opinion and stir up excitement about the staid and scripted party meeting taking place this week in Beijing that kicks off a transition to a new, younger set of top leaders.

Dozens of the more than 2,000 party delegates, among them Chairman Mao's grandson, are using social media to wax rhapsodic about China's rise and Party General Secretary Hu Jintao's live 90-minute reading of highlights from this year's party work report. Typical posts include pictures of grinning delegates on Tiananmen Square and mobile snapshots of poinsettia arrangements and chandeliers from inside the Great Hall of the People, where the congress is meeting.

Guo Mingyi, a miner from the frigid northeast who was making his debut as a party delegate, tweeted: "On this land with great affections, how can I not sing, how can I not tear up, I love this piece of land, the people and the great Chinese Communist Party!"

State media also are posting microblog interviews with officials and shooting out updates about the congress schedule via Twitter-like accounts.

But apart from being a tool to deliver Beijing's approved policy messages to the mobile phones of ordinary Chinese, the Internet is a two-way street that's also being used by the public to poke fun at and critique the propaganda. Online commentators have compared the gushy crying and clapping of some delegates over Hu's speech to North Korean style mass hysteria.

Responding to state media report about how a female delegate, Li Jian, cried five times at Hu's work report, a Sina microblog user writing under the name 'Buying Soysauce' wrote: "I sobbed uncontrollably too, at the thought that these people were my compatriots."

Wang Keqin, the assistant to the editor in chief of Beijing's Economic Observer magazine, wrote about the tears of another delegate, He Guiqin: "It's back to North Korea overnight!"

Other critics have dredged up old headlines from 1987 about the scourge of bribe-seeking and posted them online to highlight how little party rhetoric, and party problems, have changed despite major social change over the last three decades.

The clash of ideas underscores just how important the Internet has become in China's campaign to guide public opinion ? a major shift from just a few years ago.

At the last party conclave in October 2007, Twitter was a little over a year old and hashtags had only just been introduced. China's leading homegrown Twitter-like microblog service, Sina Weibo, was still two years from launch.

But as elsewhere, China's Internet population has exploded over the last five years, jumping from 170 million to more than 500 million today. Social media has boomed with it and now plays a huge part in everyday Chinese life, particularly for urban residents who use it to find restaurants, jobs and mates.

Beijing's initial reaction to social media was to block and censor, to limit conversations by banning access to Twitter and Facebook and to limit mention of anything considered sensitive or destabilizing with keyword filters. Though authorities still use those tactics, the government is increasingly proactive and working to wrest control of the online conversation by flooding the zone with its own content.

David Bandurski, a researcher with the China Media Project at Hong Kong University, says Chinese officials have learned that simply banning or blocking reports is no longer effective in the porous Internet sphere and that stifling information can backfire by fanning more interest in scandals and crises and sparking online rumors.

"You can't just stuff the genie back into the bottle," said Bandurski. "You have also to channel public opinion ... officially, they are seeing social media as the best way to send out their authoritative information and kind of drive the agenda."

But the government remains yoked to its party-ese, which can seem hopelessly out of date in the Twitter age.

A dispatch on the trend by the official Xinhua News Agency gives a hint to the flavor of Beijing's rhetoric.

"The Internet has been unprecedentedly embedded into the ongoing National Congress of the Communist Party of China," the news agency trumpeted over the weekend. "Not only can contents on the Internet be found in the congress report, but online media practitioners are attending the congress in person."

On Saturday, Chairman Mao's grandson Mao Xinyu tweeted this to his 105,943 followers on Renmin Weibo, the microblog of the official party paper, the People's Daily: "Mao Zedong thought will always be the guiding ideology of the party."

It got 155 retweets, a mediocre showing in China's lively web sphere.

Engadget tours Gogo's flying test plane, tries its improved ATG-4 in-flight WiFi (hands-on)

Engadget tours Gogo's flying test plane, tries its improved ATG-4 in-flight WiFi (hands-on)

Gogo's test plane isn't your typical jet: it seats just nine passengers, and there's no bathroom; just a closet in the back stacked with networking gear. The company, easily the biggest name in in-flight WiFi, uses the aircraft as a flying lab, where it can test everything from throughput speeds to the log-in experience. It's a small plane that flies out of a small airfield, Aurora Municipal Airport in Illinois, and it's normally just Gogo staffers onboard. Today, the company invited a few reporters aboard to test its newest air-to-ground WiFi service, ATG-4. As you can imagine, newer means faster: ATG-4 is rated for max download speeds of 9.8 Mbps, up from 3.1 Mbps with the last-gen service. It also helps that video streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and HBO Go are now blocked, which should ensure that no one person abuses his WiFi privileges.

As it happens, ATG-4 is already live on approximately 40 planes run by US Airways, Delta and Virgin America. (United has said it plans to introduce the service on select flights in the first half of 2013.) In theory, then, the best way to test ATG-4's performance might be to slip unnoticed onto a commercial flight, and see what it's like to share bandwidth with 20 other people. What's neat about the Gogo test plane, though, is that it can toggle back and forth between ATG and ATG-4, making it easier to compare performance between the two. What's more, though the test plane seats nine, Gogo is able to simulate a crowded flight, with 20 to 30 passengers attempting to use the internet at once. After 90 minutes of flying over Illinois and Missouri, we've got some first-hand impressions and also some pics, if aviation porn is your cup of tea. Read on for more.

Cultural dimensions of climate change are underestimated, overlooked and misunderstood

ScienceDaily (Nov. 11, 2012) ? The impact of climate change on many aspects of cultural life for people all over the world is not being sufficiently accounted for by scientists and policy-makers. University of Exeter-led research by an international team, published on 11th November in Nature Climate Change, shows that cultural factors are key to making climate change real to people and to motivating their responses.

From enjoying beaches or winter sports and visiting iconic natural spaces to using traditional methods of agriculture and construction in our daily lives, the research highlights the cultural experiences that bind our communities and are under threat as a result of climate change. The paper argues that governments' programmes for dealing with the consequences of climate change do not give enough consideration to what really matters to individuals and communities.

Culture binds people together and helps them overcome threats to their environments and livelihoods. Some are already experiencing such threats and profound changes to their lives. For example, the Polynesian Island of Niue, which experiences cyclones, has a population of 1,500 with four times as many Niueans now living in New Zealand. The research shows that most people remaining on the island resist migrating because of a strong attachment to the island. There is strong evidence to suggest that it is important for people's emotional well-being to have control over whether and where they move. The researchers argue that these psychological factors have not been addressed.

Lead researcher Professor Neil Adger of the University of Exeter said: "Governments have not yet addressed the cultural losses we are all facing as a result of global climate change and this could have catastrophic consequences. If the cultural dimensions of climate change continue to be ignored, it is likely that responses will fail to be effective because they simply do not connect with what matters to individuals and communities. It is vital that the cultural impact of climate change is considered, alongside plans to adapt our physical spaces to the changing environment."

Professor Katrina Brown from the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute adds: "The evidence is clear; when people experience the impacts of climate change in places that matter to them, the problems become real and they are motivated to make their futures more sustainable. This is as true in coastal Cornwall as in Pacific Islands."

Health & Fitness

To put it succinctly, whatever anyone says, seafood is healthy. Well, with some caveats: seafood fished from polluted rivers, city rivers, or contaminated lakes are far from healthy ? they may contain PCBs, mercury, or other harmful chemicals. But across the board the fish, shellfish and crustacean dishes you can find at restaurants or supermarkets near you all are nigh-guaranteed to do your body good.

Considering the latest dieting crazes, seafood has in place in most of them. This is because seafood has nearly miraculous nutrition powers. To put it succinctly, whatever anyone says, seafood is healthy. One way to ensure the highest of quality when obtaining your seafood is to purchase from a reputable online vendor. They can have your seafood shipped overnight from a coastal location where freshness is guaranteed!

One of the reasons that seafood is healthy has to do with the biochemistry and lifestyle of the fish. Fishes, in order to breathe, must swim constantly. Their entire body is lean muscle, the delicious seafood fillets that wind up on your plate. Compared to the chubby unattractive cow, the life of a fish is one constant streamlined marathon.

A benefit to eating healthy seafood is that it is really easy to prepare and tastes great. Unlike other unpleasant ?healthy? choices like algae goo and grass juice, seafood tastes absolutely wonderful. You can?t go wrong preparing fish dishes. The simplest way to prepare salmon, for example, is to rub it with some spice ? salt and pepper will do ? and pan fry it in a quarter-sized drop of olive oil. First 6 minutes on the skin side and second 3 to 4 minutes on the flesh side should cook an average salmon fillet through.

Lobster meat can by steamed by boiling lobsters in the shells, but dealing with fresh live lobster can be unnerving, and the best addition to lobster is drawn butter ? not as healthy as pan seared salmon. Serve it with sautee?d or steamed vegetables, and you?ve got a healthy and filling meal.

If you don?t want to serve greasy hamburgers to your guests at an outdoor grill party, you can opt for grill tuna steaks. They are both healthy and they look classier too as compared to burgers. They look even more attractive when presented on nice plates and garnished colorfully with grated carrots and lemon wedge. The method of preparation is same as that of hamburgers and everyone present will agree that seafood is healthy.

Fish is an important source of omega-3 fatty acids, found especially in salmon. These fatty acids assist in clearing up acne, rosacea, and can improve the effects of aging on the skin. Also seafood can be a good source of beneficial fat and cholesterol. Vegetarians that rely on fish for protein are healthier than meat eaters.

To conclude, fish is utterly beneficial to your health. It is full of substances that are good for you, and unless the fish is from some unsavory source, it is free of substances that are bad for you.Eat some fish today, I know I will. Fish can be prepared very easily, and it takes little seasoning to make seafood taste good. Fish also has the added benefit of being classier than red meat or poultry.

It can often be difficult to locate a good source for fresh seafood, especially if you live a long way from the coast. This used to be a huge problem, and the only kind of seafood available would have been frozen. Not anymore though! With the introduction of the Internet and Overnight Delivery with either Fedex or UPS, you can now get fresh seafood delivered straight to you. Quality Fresh Seafood is one great choice for an online seafood vendor.

The king of seafood is the fresh maine lobster, to ensure you?re getting the freshest, and to add lobster clambake to your delicious dinner. Visit Quality Fresh Seafood. Sit back and pretend you?re on the beach.

Ethiopia abusing religious freedom of Muslims: U.S. body

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - A U.S. panel on religious freedom accused the Ethiopian government of trying to tighten control of its Muslim minority amid mass protests, saying it is risking greater destabilization of the Horn of Africa region.

Ethiopia, which has long been seen by the West as a bulwark against Muslim rebels in neighboring Somalia, says it fears militant Islam is taking root in the country.

However, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) accused the government of arresting peaceful Muslim protesters, noting that 29 of them had been charged last month with what the authorities said was "planning to commit terrorist acts".

Ethiopian Muslims, who make up about a third of the population in the majority Christian country, accuse the government of interfering in the highest Muslim affairs body, the Ethiopia Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (EIASC). Thousands of Muslims have staged weekly mosque sit-ins and street protests in Addis Ababa over the past year.

"The arrests, terrorism charges and takeover of EIASC signify a troubling escalation in the government's attempts to control Ethiopia's Muslim community and provide further evidence of a decline in religious freedom in Ethiopia," the Commission said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Ethiopian officials were unavailable for comment on the statement from the Commission, whose members are appointed by President Barack Obama and senior Congressional Democrats and Republicans.

Commission Chairwoman Katrina Lantos Swett called on the U.S. government to raise the issue with Addis Ababa.

"USCIRF has found that repressing religious communities in the name of countering extremism leads to more extremism, greater instability, and possibly violence," she said.

"Given Ethiopia's strategic importance in the Horn of Africa ... it is vital that the Ethiopian government end its religious freedom abuses and allow Muslims to practice peacefully their faith as they see fit," she added. "Otherwise the government's current policies and practices will lead to greater destabilization of an already volatile region."

Over the past six years Ethiopia has twice sent troops into Somalia to battle Islamist rebels, including al Shaabab militants, and officials say some of the protesters are bankrolled by Islamist groups in the Middle East.

The Commission backed the protesters' complaints that the government had been trying since last year to impose the apolitical Al Ahbash sect on Ethiopian Muslims. The government has denied this but dozens of Muslims have been arrested since the demonstrations started in 2011.

Ethiopia is 63 percent Christian and 34 percent Muslim, according to official figures, with the vast majority of Muslims adhering to the moderate, Sufi version of Islam.

Barring an unforeseen last-minute snag, Strikeforce to fold; Ronda Rousey and others headed to UFC

Multiple sources confirmed to Yahoo! Sports Thursday that Zuffa has reached a deal with Showtime to end the Strikeforce promotion sometime early in 2013, a move that will bring superstar Ronda Rousey into the UFC.

Neither UFC president Dana White nor UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta could be reached for comment on Strikeforce's demise, which was first reported Thursday by TMZ. Chris DeBlasio, a spokesman for Showtime, which has broadcast Strikeforce events since 2009, declined comment.

The plan is for the promotion to fold after a Jan. 12 card in Oklahoma City, in which all of the Strikeforce men's champions will defend their belts. A source stressed that nothing has been signed and, thus, things could change.

That, however, appears unlikely, given the frequently rocky relationship between White and Showtime officials. Folding the promotion into the UFC would also follow Zuffa's pattern.

Zuffa purchased Strikeforce from Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment in March 2011, reportedly for more than $40 million. Given that Zuffa had previously purchased competitors PRIDE, World Fighting Alliance and World Extreme Cagefighting and merged them into the UFC, speculation mounted almost instantly about Strikeforce's future.

Strikeforce cards in September and November were canceled as the tensions between the sides heated.

White told Yahoo! Sports late last month that Rousey, Strikeforce's bantamweight champion, would fight in the UFC one day, a statement that marked an abrupt change of position. White had previously said there weren't enough quality women to form a division in the UFC and that he saw no sense doing what he termed "one-off" fights.

But Rousey, an Olympic bronze medalist in judo who has become a sensation with her meteoric rise in MMA, changed his mind. He said he was blown away by Rousey's ability to both fight and promote.

Look, I know a lot of people are going to say we're doing this because she's pretty. But [ex-Strikeforce star] Gina [Carano] was pretty, too. Ronda is a whole other story. She's nasty. She's a real fighter. She not only likes to win, she likes to finish. Think about this: Everyone she fights knows what is coming, that armbar of hers, and no one can stop it. They have a whole [expletive] training camp to prepare for that one move and nobody has been able to stop it yet.

People who are nasty and technically sound and have that attitude, I love them. She's an Olympic medalist and she's got a great history, but she's in the gym all the time. She's a dude in a girl's body. She loves to beat the [expletive] out of people and she's serious about getting better. She's not saying, 'I'm the champ and I've beaten everyone in the first round,' and taking a victory tour. She's up there in Stockton working with the Diaz brothers, trying to get better.

Details are sparse about how the merger will work and when Strikeforce fighters will begin appearing on UFC cards.

White, though, likes to do things in a major way and it wouldn't be a shock to see Rousey defend her belt in February in Las Vegas on the UFC's annual Super Bowl weekend card. That's one of the company's biggest shows of the year and, given that Rousey hasn't fought since defeating Sarah Kaufman on Aug. 18, would be a perfect launching point for her career.

Whether she will be the first woman to actually fight in the cage is questionable. When Strikeforce ends, the UFC will assume the contracts of its women's fighters. White told Yahoo! Sports last month that women such as ex-champions Miesha Tate and Cris "Cyborg" Santos and Sara McMann, a wrestling silver medalist at the 2004 Olympics, would also fight in the UFC.

Other elite fighters in Strikeforce who would be headed to the UFC include heavyweight Daniel Cormier, middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez and welterweight champion Nate Marquardt. Melendez is rated seventh in the current Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound ratings.

Several fighters took to social media Thursday evening to comment. Tate wrote on Twitter, "So Stoked to be fighting for the @ufc it's been a dream of mine for along time! SO happy it's finally come true:-D" UFC middleweight contender Brian Stann also seemed to tweet confirmation of the news.

Pope resurrects Latin with academy to boost study

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican is trying to resurrect Latin.

Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree Saturday creating a new pontifical academy for Latin studies to try to boost interest in the official language of the Roman Catholic Church that is nevertheless out of widespread use elsewhere.

Benedict acknowledged Latin's fall from grace in his decree, saying future priests nowadays often learn only a "superficial" knowledge of Latin in their seminaries. The new academy will promote Latin through conferences, publications and instruction in Catholic schools, universities and seminaries, he wrote.

As would be expected, the decree and its founding statutes were written in Latin.

Benedict's move is further evidence of his attempt to restore the church to its traditional roots as it battles to prevent the faithful from straying in today's increasingly secular world. Benedict has been promoting this "new evangelization" to try to reassert Christianity's place in society in parts of the world where it's fallen by the wayside, a victim of competition from Pentecostal churches as well as its own priestly sex abuse scandals.

The initiative is also an olive branch to traditionalist Catholics, who have long lamented the modernizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council which replaced the Latin liturgy with Mass in the vernacular.

In 2007, Benedict relaxed restrictions on celebrating the old Latin Mass ? a move which supporters say has increased interest in the Latin language as well as the Latin liturgy.

Since becoming pope in 2005, Benedict has reintroduced Latin in much of his own Vatican celebrations, with the Gospel often chanted in the ancient language.

The Vatican argues that while few ordinary Catholics may understand Latin, it is a universal language that represents the universal church and doesn't favor the language of one particular group over another. Critics say the return to Latin is just another indication of how out of touch today's Catholic Church is with the modern world.

(Corrects property for 2 Harbors in ninth paragraph.)

Nov. eight (Bloomberg) ? President Barack Obama?s re-election sent debt produces tumbling and stoked speculation his administration would search for more aggressive steps to raise housing that is going to guide to a rise in home-loan refinancing.
Real estate expense trusts that purchase home loan personal debt tumbled the most in a yr yesterday on worry that much more home-owners can be ready to prepay home loans, even though lower produces on new investments would squeeze the firms? earnings and dividends. The insurance policies of Obama and also the Federal Reserve, whose chairman Republican challenger Mitt Romney experienced reported he would substitute, have expanded chances for house owners to qualify for brand new financial loans whilst sending borrowing fees to history lows.
?The continuation of the insurance policies that begun past yr or so are basically certain now,? stated Vitaliy Liberman, a portfolio supervisor at Los Angeles-based DoubleLine Cash LP, which oversees in excess of $45 billion.
Government-backed mortgage bonds used by loan providers to offer and promote new financial loans rallied yesterday together with Treasuries, on speculation Obama?s gain can make it harder for politicians to avert a so-called fiscal cliff of shelling out cuts and tax increases, fueling a flight on the safety of governing administration securities, and ensure it is much easier to the Fed to aid the economic climate by obtaining the credit card debt and restraining short-term prices.

Growing Refinancing

Obama?s administration may perhaps do extra to enhance housing, which led the U.S. into recession and is now rebounding after a six- calendar year slump. That recovery made it easier for the president win in swing states which include Nevada and Colorado.
This features growing applications to help you house owners refinance, together with the house Economical Refinance Software for borrowers with little if any house equity. Obama also may take into consideration replacing the acting overseer of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, who?s got opposed principal forgiveness on loans they assure.
?We perspective housing as a obvious winner next the election effects,? explained Edward Mills, an analyst at FBR Money Markets.
Still, whilst housing has proven indications of advancement, 10.8 million Us citizens owe extra on their home loans than their households are truly worth, in line with CoreLogic, Inc., three.8 million house financial loans are no less than 90 days delinquent, as outlined by the Mortgage loan Bankers Association, and price levels remain 29 percent underneath the July 2006 peak, based on the SP/Case-Shiller Directory.

?Challenging Time?

?We?ve been by way of a very difficult time and there?s a lot of people nonetheless battling on the market,? said Monthly bill Roth, chief investment decision officer at Minnetonka, Minnesota-based Two Harbors Investment decision Corp., a home finance loan REIT with $15.3 billion of property. ?The administration remains incredibly centered on encouraging householders, assisting debtors, placing more cash in people?s pockets.?
Two Harbors, that?s some investments that could gain from housing gains, has also acquired prepayment-protected Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac securities that may enable it stay away from owning to reinvest in debt at lessen costs. It enhanced its holdings of bonds backed by loans which have recently been via HARP and are generally now excluded from tapping the program once again, by $2.one billion previous quarter.
Bondholders spending much more than facial area worth for securities danger losses if sufficient homeowners just take out new mortgages to repay their existing credit card debt.
Costs on 30-year home loans, which achieved a file low of 3.36 % very last thirty day period, will most likely be 0.1 proportion stage lessen below Obama ahead of the election, Bank of The us Corp. analysts led by Chris Flanagan wrote within a report previous week.

Falling Costs

?Treasury premiums are slipping and main home finance loan premiums may keep fall likewise,? explained Walt Schmidt, a home loan strategist in Chicago at FTN Monetary, the brokerage unit of To start with Horizon National Corp. ?The market is involved because Obama won that he is going to be far more inclined to deliver refinancing reduction to borrowers.?
Annaly Cash Management Inc., the biggest mortgage loan genuine estate investment decision trust, is bracing for your higher level of prepayments as Obama carries on to adjust policies.
Below Obama?s management, ?we most likely see far more plan meddling,? Wellington Denahan-Norris, chief government officer of Annaly with $141.six billion of assets as of Sept. thirty, said this month over a convention simply call.
Annaly fell 2.seven percent yesterday to $14.91, including to your ten % drop as a result of Nov. 6 since the Fed in September started off buying $40 billion of house loan bonds a month to increase the marketplace. The Bloomberg index of REITs dropped 7.8 % through the Fed?s announcement by means of yesterday.

House Rates

Single-family dwelling values are climbing following a six-year slump as customers compete to get a shrinking furnish of homes detailed available for purchase. U.S. residence selling prices jumped 5 percent in September from a yr earlier, the most significant 12-month boost due to the fact July 2006, CoreLogic Inc., an Irvine, California-based genuine estate facts supplier, reported this month.
Legislation to grow HARP might not be demanded since the program is already exceeding anticipations. Refinancing of higher-rate home loans driven through the plan reached new highs final thirty day period, beating the forecasts of analysts at JPMorgan Chase Co., Credit score Suisse Team AG, Barclays Plc, and Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc.
The program is presently being adjusted. Changes in September that reduced lenders? pitfalls of getting to repurchase negative loans since of appraisal problems could have fueled a few of October?s gains, Credit score Suisse analysts led my Mahesh Swaminathan and Barclays analysts led by Nicholas Strand wrote yesterday in studies.

DeMarco Replacement

Obama likely will put ahead a new head of your Federal Housing Finance Company to replace Edward DeMarco, the current acting director, ?as section of a broader deal of monetary regulators,? reported Isaac Boltansky, an analyst for Compass Position Research Investing LLC. The revolutionary leaders wouldn?t be verified until finally the second quarter of 2013, he mentioned.
DeMarco has sought to lessen Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac?s role while in the current market as lawmakers didn?t get action. One evaluate has long been to increase the charges they charge to ensure home finance loan securities.
?Given that the FHFA has regularly been striving to make it a lot easier for HARP borrowers to refinance throughout the last 12 months, we are convinced some minimal tweaks to HARP will be in the cards whether or not Ed DeMarco will not be replaced,? Citigroup Inc. analysts led by Ankur Mehta said.
California Senator Barbara Boxer and Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey, the two Democrats, have forced for an enlargement of help to property owners.

HARP Growth

A statement authored by Menendez and Boxer would develop the HARP system with steps which include a lot more reduction for lenders from repurchase requirements.
?The expenses is actually a no-nonsense correct on the HARP method,? Boltansky claimed. ?While HARP has made it easier for about one.5 million people today, it even now hasn?t arrive close to its possibilities. They estimate three million far more men and women will likely be capable to refinance less than this bill.?
Obama?s election also suggests the property finance loan desire tax deduction won?t be touched, claimed Chris Macke, senior real estate strategist at CBRE Group Inc.?s world-wide investigation and consulting division in Boston. The credit score cuts down the cost of owning your house ?significantly,? Macke reported.

Value of urban green spaces and greening ? Unisa Online ? News ...

Dr Christy Boylan (Ireland), Prof Richard Hendrick (Director: School of Environmental Sciences), Dr Gregory Moore (University of Melbourne, Australia) and Prof Willie Nel (CoD: Environmental Sciences)

The Department of Environmental Sciences (DES) in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES) held a very successful colloquium on 1 November 2012 at the Florida Campus, focusing on the value of urban green spaces and greening. Papers were submitted by two international speakers and academics from the department.

The presentations included the following:

  • The real value of urban trees and landscapes by Dr Gregory Moore, University of Melbourne, Australia
  • The arboriculture and economic benefits of formative pruning of street trees by Dr Gregory Moore, University of Melbourne, Australia
  • The diverse values and uses of parks by Dr Christy Boylan, Ireland
  • Management of parks and open spaces ? strategies and models by Dr Christy Boylan, Ireland
  • Estimates of carbon storage by jacaranda street trees in the City of Tshwane by Prof Hennie Stoffberg, DES, Unisa

Dr Moore highlighted and discussed in detail the variety of benefits, both socioeconomic as well as environmental, that urban greening and trees have within an urban environment. The presentation was especially apt in the light of climate change and global warming. The most important aspects are summarised below:

Climate related values Environmental values
  • Shade
  • Shelter from the wind
  • Thermal insulation
  • Temperature modification
  • Reduction in glare
  • Humidification of the air
  • Filtration of polluted air
  • Interception of rainfall
  • Reduced water runoff
  • Reduced stream turbidity
  • Altered effective precipitation
  • Production of oxygen
  • Fixing of carbon dioxide
  • Reduced soil erosion
  • Protecting watersheds
  • Ameliorating wind flow
  • Improved air quality
  • Altering ambient temperature
  • Noise abatement
  • Wildlife habitat
  • Create ecosystems

Dr Moore concluded that it was concerning that, at a time when urban trees and public open space were being appreciated as urban infrastructure assets, they were being threatened and neglected in many major cities. This will have a serious impact on the capacity of cities and regions to mitigate at least some of the effects of global climate change. Also, this will have a deleterious effect on human health, social structures and the economic components of our society as well as the environment.

Dr Boylan highlighted the various and diverse values and uses of parks. He outlined a dazzling array of benefits including human health and well-being, economic in terms of tourism, visual impacts and biodiversity, engineering values, education and research values, heritage values, social interaction and community development.

In his follow-up presentation, Dr Moore focused on professional street tree pruning, highlighting the environmental and economic benefits if these practices were implemented scientifically and correctly by city parks departments, which is seldom the case.

In his follow-up presentation on parks management strategies and models, Dr Boylan highlighted the benefits and risks of four options of private-public management models for the management of urban green spaces as well as seven ingredients required to do so successfully.

Unisa?s own Prof Hennie Stoffberg presented findings of a study published in 2012 by Unisa Press which indicated that about 17% (33 300) of the City of Pretoria?s urban street tree forests (195 000 trees) consisted of jacaranda trees. This research indicated that these trees stored more than 41 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents in their wood and roots. Carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas and it thus places great emphasis on the critical necessity of street tree urban infrastructure to reduce global climate change impacts.

Home improvement grants: Free Cash Grants For Home Improvement

Need cash to help finance your home improvement costs? Home improvement grants provide free money to those who are capable of fixing their house, increasing the property value, or improving the efficiency of their home. The government and private foundations provide this money to home owners as a way to stimulate the economy, increase home values in the community, and ultimately increase property taxes due to the higher home values.

Applying for grants for home improvement is simply a matter of search the grant database to find the funds that are available in your area. And since there is no limit on the number of grants that can be requested and received, there are often opportunities to obtain multiple grant checks to help finance home improvement, upgrades, and expansion costs. You may be able to get a $12,000 home repair grant from your local government, for example, and a $7,000 grant to help you install energy efficient equipment in your home.

The money is available to millions of Americans, and as long as you are at least 18 years old and a home owner, you can apply to receive some of this free government money. once obtained, simply use the money to help with your repair costs and you will never be asked to pay the money back. It's all part of the government's initiative to improve the real estate market, get the economy back on track, and bring in more tax dollars in the long run. Whatever the case, the government is continuing to support these programs for the time being and it is just a matter of asking for the money.

Telltale visible signs of aging may predict heart disease

ScienceDaily (Nov. 6, 2012) ? If you look old, your heart may feel old, according to research presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2012.

In a new study, those who had three to four aging signs -- receding hairline at the temples, baldness at the head's crown, earlobe crease, or yellow fatty deposits around the eyelid (xanthelasmata) -- had a 57 percent increased risk for heart attack and a 39 percent increased risk for heart disease .

"The visible signs of aging reflect physiologic or biological age, not chronological age, and are independent of chronological age," said Anne Tybjaerg-Hansen, M.D., the study's senior author and professor of clinical biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

Researchers analyzed 10,885 participants 40 years and older (45 percent women) in the Copenhagen Heart Study. Of these, 7,537 had frontoparietal baldness (receding hairline at the temples), 3,938 had crown top baldness, 3,405 had earlobe crease, and 678 had fatty deposits around the eye.

In 35 years of follow-up, 3,401 participants developed heart disease and 1,708 had a heart attack.

Individually and combined, these signs predicted heart attack and heart disease independent of traditional risk factors. Fatty deposits around the eye were the strongest individual predictor of both heart attack and heart disease.

Heart attack and heart disease risk increased with each additional sign of aging in all age groups and among men and women. The highest risk was for those in their 70s and those with multiple signs of aging.

In the study, nurses and laboratory technicians noted the quantity of gray hair, prominence of wrinkles, the type and extent of baldness, the presence of earlobe crease and eyelid deposits.

"Checking these visible aging signs should be a routine part of every doctor's physical examination," Tybjaerg-Hansen said.

(AP) ? For President Barack Obama, it's ending where it all began.

Obama will close his 2012 campaign with a nighttime rally Monday in Iowa, where his 2008 caucus victory jumpstarted his road to the White House. The president is expected to reflect on the state's pivotal role in his political rise during remarks delivered at the site of his first Iowa campaign headquarters.

But it's more than just nostalgia that is bringing Obama back to Iowa one more time. The president's team is seeking to hold off Republican challenger Mitt Romney by sweeping the Midwest, including Iowa's relatively small prize of six Electoral College votes.

Obama will be joined by his wife, Michelle, rocker Bruce Springsteen and a cadre of longtime advisers and friends who have been with him for the final stretch of his final campaign.

"I think tonight is going to be a fairly profoundly emotional night, to be there where it all started and nobody really saw how we could put it all together," said David Plouffe, Obama's senior adviser.

Obama's 2008 win in Iowa has taken on almost mythical proportions among aides who spent months here with the then-unknown U.S. senator from Illinois, urging voters in the largely white state to put a black man on the path to the presidency.

They recalled on Monday how much has changed since then, reminiscing about the president calling to introduce himself to everyone from Iowa's church leaders to high school students.

Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said Obama, after having been told by one young woman that she was in yearbook class and needed the candidate to call her back, told his aides: 'You know, running for president can be a humbling experience," Axelrod said.

Axelrod and Plouffe wore matching "Obama '08" fleece pullovers Monday. Two other fixtures from the 2008 campaign also made special appearances: Robert Gibbs, a longtime Obama aide who was Obama's first White House press secretary, and Reggie Love, Obama's former personal assistant.

"It's like the end of a long-running series and all the characters are coming back to be here," Axelrod said. He and Plouffe spoke to reporters during Obama's first rally earlier in the day in Madison, Wis.

Obama's team is projecting confidence, but the outcome of Tuesday's election is far from certain. Polls show Obama and Romney locked in a tight race nationally, though the president appears to have an edge in key battleground states.

Iowa plays a key role in the campaign's Midwestern firewall strategy. Victories in Iowa, Wisconsin and Ohio would put Obama over the required 270 Electoral College votes.

Not surprisingly, Obama also stopped Monday in Wisconsin and Ohio.

While their focus was clearly on the Midwest heading into Election Day, the president's team insisted he was poised for a sweeping victory.

"I don't want to put a precise number on it, but I think we have a good chance to break 300," Axelrod said in an interview with CBS Radio.

How big and small ad agencies can find a new operating model

Howdy, new business fan. Who isn?t looking for new ways to generate revenue through new operating models? You don?t need another guru preaching about all the change happening in our space. But ya might need an innovative thought or two on how your agency can win given the new realities of this ever-shifting industry landscape (insert appropriate guru talk around all the changes.)

As you think about ?news ways of doing business and making money, here?s one useful tip: look beyond our profession. By all means, ya gotta do what many call the three ?Cs? ? explore and analyze your company, your category and your customer. But to me, you gotta go a bit further. I think the best new thinking comes from some liberal borrowing from relevant and sometimes unusual sources.

Which is why you should check out this article from the Harvard Business Review blog. Entitled, ?Can Bigger be Faster,? it offers up a big picture thought on why bigger organizations can, in fact, be faster. The answer seen in the post: due to their networks. And then, they use the US Military, one of the largest organizations in the world, as an example. The article identifies four strategies that are an integral part of their own change due to?wait for it?THEIR ever-shifting landscape.

It is terrific reading, written by some smart dudes. And don?t be thinking, by the way, the thoughts are relevant for big agencies only. If you?re leading a ten-person shop, you should still check out the article.

However, the problem with articles like these, however, is that they are too broad. While I applaud big picture, head-nod thoughts like, ?build relationships? and ?encourage dissent,? I would take this 30,000 foot thinking and bring it down to good ol? main street. Or better yet, read the article through an agency lens. Damn good thing you have someone doing this. Here are some quick thoughts to get you started:

Technology must be a part of any new solution

Whether you use technology to encourage communication between teams, warehouse category knowledge, or optimize work flow / project management, it can be a useful tool. It can also be marketable and might provide some differentiation in, say?a new business pitch!

A dose of ?change management? thinking will also be needed

I barely know what ?change management? means. Here?s a high level view. Or check out wikipedia. I think it means what you think it means. What?s interesting, to me, is that whatever new operating model or change you are considering, it will be important to consider HOW the change is implemented and that you take into consideration all parties. Staff, clients, suppliers, agency owners, etc.

Test and tweak the innovation first with clients

Avoid the ?no proof? objection ? a sure-fire killer in new business pitches ? and consider trying out and then optimizing your innovation with clients. Not your biggest ones, of course. But someone that can offer you the right balance of risk / reward. Some positive results for a client or two ? a case study for your news ? can do wonders. One could even argue that you could take a crawl ? walk ? run approach to anything new. You do, after all, have mortgages at stake. No matter how big your agency is. Crawl: small clients. Walk: a new business pitch. Run: more external visibility, more clients, etc.

Anywho, hope this gives you an idea or two that will help your business. Check out the article, do your other ?C? analysis, and then get to innovatin?. Thanks for your time today.

P.S. Oh, and should you need some specifics? ?Some ad agency main street thinking? Plenty of innovative agency thinking now for sale now at Thunderclap! Gimme a shout.
