She?s Just Not That Into Jew

Sara grew up in California in one of the strictest Hasidic sects, where she learned that bars, public schools, non-Jews, and even Jews from other Hasidic sects, were to be avoided. At 18, she met her future husband for one hour. Then they married. Because she was entirely uneducated about sex, sleeping with her husband was so repulsive and frightening to her, she could endure it only a few times. After that, she spent months creating excuses until her husband got fed up, drained her bank account, and left her. Ostracized by her family and community, Sara realized she could either commit suicide or reinvent herself. So she saved up enough money to flee to New York.

8 cool hotels that used to be forts

Courtesy of Cap Rocat

Cap Rocat, a former Spanish fortress, has been refurbished for travelers seeking luxury.

By Marisa LaScala, Conde Nast Traveler

Historic forts were often set up on high elevations or perched at the edges of bodies of water?in other words, places that have amazing views. Lucky for us, many of these buildings are now historic?hotels.

Cap Rocat,?Mallorca, Spain
On a secluded peninsula in the Bay of Palma, Cap Rocat is a 19th-century military fortress that's been transformed into a 24-room hotel. You have to cross a drawbridge to enter, and the old bunker, or gunpowder depot, is now the setting for cocktails or private events. But to get the best views of the bay, you should leave the bunker and peek out over the fortress walls on the rooftop terrace.

Ahilya Fort,?Maheshwar, India
The impressive Ahilya Fort overlooks the sacred Narmada river, and the outside appears just as it did in the mid to late 1700s, when Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar built the structure. Inside, though, Prince Richard Holkar ? her descendant and the last Maharajah of Indore ? restored the property, and now it has a Relais & Ch?teaux distinction.

Cavallo Point Lodge,?Sausalito, Calif.
Once known as the Fort Baker military base, this California complex still has a location that's of strategic importance to travelers: It's situated right in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Visitors stay in historic buildings that were once officers' quarters, which still bear many of the original touches from when they were built between 1901 and 1915. The best feature might be the view, looking out onto San Francisco Bay.

Hotel Fort Canning,?Singapore
The location of Hotel Fort Canning has played a key role in the country's history as early as the 14th century, when it was the site for the palatial resort of former Majapahit kings. In 1859, it was converted into military barracks and it served as the headquarters of the Singapore Base District until World War II. Now, it's once again a resort, complete with 86 stylish guest rooms ? though a display of artifacts from the 14th through the 19th centuries, embedded in the lobby floor, pays homage to the site's history.

Hotel Ka?til,?Bol, Croatia
Near the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, the Hotel Ka?til is a baroque fortress that once belonged to the aristocratic Vusio family of Bra?. The hotel is also close to another historic building ? Bol's 15th-century Dominican monastery ? which hosts classical music concerts on summer evenings.

Hotel Fortaleza do Guincho,?Lisbon, Portugal
Despite its lengthy history ? which dates to 1642 and includes both the Seven Year's War in the mid 1700s and the Liberal Wars in the early 1800s ??Fortaleza do Guincho was abandoned and almost became ruins before it was sold at public auction. The fort now serves (in our mind) a higher purpose ? as a hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant and eight courtyard rooms where small fortress windows provide views of the beach.

Kasbah du Toubkal,?Morocco
The old feudal chief who used this fort as a summer retreat could really pick a location, as every window in the Kasbah looks out onto the Toubkal National Park and High Atlas Moutains. Today, the hilltop site ? which was restored using traditional building techniques and local labor ? has 14 guest rooms, and a portion of the room rates are funneled back into the local Berber village that surrounds it.

Spitbank Fort, Portsmouth, England
Sure, the utilitarian exterior might not make for the prettiest-looking hotel, but what the Spitbank Fort lacks in beauty, it makes up for in exclusivity. The hotel is its own private island destination, accessible only by boat from nearby Gosport. It was built in the late 1800s to fend off an attack from Napolean III, but now it's home to eight luxury bedrooms and a rooftop sundeck with 360-degree sea views.

Y! Big Story: What the minimum wage gets you

Everything you need to know to get up to speed on the story of the day

Minimum wage advocateWhat does $7.25 an hour get you?

These days, barely two gallons of gas. You'd probably have to work 30 minutes to enjoy a tall Frappuccino (maybe more if prices keep going up), although that's an indulgence when a box of diapers would cost about two hours of labor.

As the economy slowly rebuilds itself, talk about raising the minimum wage is, well, on the rise, and it has taken on more urgency in cities, states, and at the national level:

  • Eight states raised minimum wages on January 1.
  • Advocates in New York ($7.25/hr) are lobbying for $8.50, a pay raise that Governor Mario Cuomo calls harder to pass than gay marriage.
  • Legislators in New Jersey ($7.25/hr) want to add $2,500 to a full-time minimum-wage annual salary that is indexed to inflation. Governor Chris Christie has said, "I'm showing a willingness to listen but also honestly saying I'm not inclined to do so."
  • Connecticut ($8.25/hr) lost momentum on its campaign to raise wages, although the issue is still percolating among legislators.
  • Missouri may vote on a November referendum.
  • Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) introduced the Rebuild America Act in March, part of which addresses raising the federal minimum wage.

Minimum Wages in the United StatesThe debate over who benefits: It's clear who immediately profits from a wage bump?the current job-holder. But, the real back-and-forth revolves around who loses out because of a wage hike: Are increases a "job killer" (a $1.25/hour boost for one could mean no job for another), or will businesses benefit from better-paid consumers? Do the poor lose out, partly because they don't even work in the first place?

Then there's the impassioned debate over the "moral obligation:" Faith leaders talk about championing the "poor and needy," while the other side emphasizes the "moral imperative" of protecting job creation. In a speech commemorating a federal hourly wage raise 15 years ago, Robert Reich, Secretary of Labor under Bill Clinton, hinged the minimum wage concept to a "moral basis of our labor."

Minimum Wage Chart

Declining purchasing power: While media coverage has defined the debate along party lines, politicians like Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama have agreed on one thing: Inflation has reduced the purchasing power of the minimum wage. "Over 30 years, we've had either stagnating, at best, or declining wages for our low-wage workers," says University of California at Berkeley labor economist Sylvia Allegretto to Yahoo!. "This idea that we can have a thriving economy, when we have a good swath of our workers losing ground in pay decade after decade, while those at the top are making more and more money, that does not make a successful economy."

Minimum wage by the numbers:

  • The last time there was a federal minimum wage boost was in 2009.
  • 1.8 million workers earn $7.25/hour.
  • 2.5 million workers earn less, due to exemptions that allow lower wages for certain types of workers (including students).
  • Women make up two-thirds of minimum-wage workers.
  • The same proportion of women work in occupations that depend upon tips, which has a federal minimum of $2.13/hour.
  • If wages were indexed to inflation since 1968 wages, which is the high point of American purchasing power, the minimum wage would be $10.58.
  • If wages rose at the same rate as executive salaries, the lowest-paid worker would make a whopping $23/hour.

Earned income tax creditThe case study of the teen summer market: Among those campaigning for minimum wage increases are kids barely old enough to land a job. A 12-year-old Girl Scout helped to galvanize the New York discussion on wages: Hannah Buckler started a petition to support a minimum wage increase. More than 3,000 miles away, students at a San Jose college pushed the city council to approve a November ballot initiative to raise its minimum wages and tie future increases to the cost of living.

Some economists, though, have focused on the younger generation as a prime example of the minimum wage's negative effects: Teens lose out on summer and part-time jobs because businesses can't afford to hire them. A recent effort has been underway to loosen child-labor laws. Some studies, however, dispute a causal connection.

Instead, academics like Allegretto say that the laws of supply and demand don't apply to minimum wage, pointing to the idea of monopsony. For instance, the way Apple and Wal-Mart have created their own supply chain and labor forces, illustrates monopsony in action.

To oversimplify: Basic economy theory believes that when the cost rises (in this case, labor costs), demand falls. But the buyer in this case is the employer paying below-competitive wages. "The wages are actually set below supply and demand," Allegretto says. "In theory, you can increase the wage and employment" and also reduce costly churn and recruitment at the same time. And while it's tempting to see this as a labor versus business dispute, coalitions like the Business for a Fair Minimum Wage, which includes companies like Costco, support minimum wage increases.

Sub-minimum wages: There's another class of wage-earners who make even less than the minimum: those who get tips on the job.

Like many tipped workers, [Zhanneta] Dunder has trouble making ends meet because of an obscure federal provision called the tip credit, which has established a sub-minimum wage for tipped workers at $2.15 per hour, or $4,333 a year for a full-time worker. Forty-five states have established slightly higher sub-minimum wages...Organizations like the New York nonprofit Restaurant Opportunities Centers don't think that's enough, and recommend at least raising tipped wages to 70 percent of the minimum wage...Tipped workers, the group says, are more likely to fall into poverty than those who receive minimum wage. Servers rely on food stamps at nearly double the rate of the general population. (May 23, Women eNews)

As with federal minimum wages, regions can choose to pay more. The San Francisco living wage rose to $10.24 on January 1; employers are also required to pay towards health care coverage, which diners have seen as a bill surcharge.

Real value of minimum wage and tipped-worker minimum wageWhat is minimum wage throughout United States? Although the federal minimum is $7.25, three states (Wyoming/$5.15, Georgia/$5.15, and Arkansas/$6.25) have lower state wages that apply to certain businesses and exemptions.

Below, a chart that contrasts the annual minimum-wage salary with a state's median income, for a sampling of states.

Origin Genesis (i7-3930k)

The Origin Genesis (Core i7-3930K) ($5,894 direct) is an update to the Origin Genesis ($6,499 direct, 4 stars) gaming desktop we looked at in 2010. It has a new six-core Intel Core i7-3930K processor (aka Sandy Bridge?E) and three Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 graphics cards. These are some of the most powerful components you can currently buy, and naturally the system is made to achieve the pinnacle of performance on multiple tasks including multimedia and gaming. Is the Genesis better than our current ?ber-gaming Editors' Choice, the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K) ($5,289 direct, 4.5 stars)? Read on to find out.

Design and Features

This version of the Genesis uses a lightly customized Bitfenix Shinobi XL chassis, which is a towering, black-painted behemoth with a windowed side panel. It has the look of an imposing gaming rig, worthy of inclusion in the $5K club. The system has six USB 3.0 ports (four on the top panel), whereas others are limited to two inconveniently placed ports in the back. There are seven USB 2.0 ports as well, for slower peripherals like game controllers, keyboards, and mice. There's a specialized "SuperCharge" port on the top of the system, which is a 2.5-amp USB port for charging your phone or tablet; it's a nicety that gadget-laden folk will welcome. The Genesis also has a FireWire 400 port, two Ethernet jacks (each can access a separate network), S/PDIF digital audio out, and analog audio jacks. The three GTX 680 cards provide a total of six DVI ports, three DisplayPort, and three HDMI ports; you can funnel all of this power through a single DVI port, or you can configure a surround setup with three monitors and 3D glasses (sold separately). The Genesis comes with a BD-RE Blu-ray burner that also reads and burns CDs and DVDs. With this system, you're well covered for entertainment.

The inside of the system is roomy, although the video cards restrict expansion somewhat. There is one free PCI Express (PCIe) x1 slot, but the video cards block your access to it. Two solid-state drives (SSDs) in a RAID Level 0 array provide a speedy platform for running your OS and programs, and a 2TB 7,200rpm drive gives you plenty of extra capacity as well. There is also room for an additional three optical drives or 5.25-inch devices and up to five hard drives (which you install on removable sleds). There are only two free SATA ports on the motherboard to service any additional drives, however. There are four free DIMM slots in case you need more than the included 16GB. A 1,200-watt power supply gives the necessary juice to everything, including the interior lighting, accomplished with multiple red LEDs, that gives you a uniform glow by which you see the hardware you've paid so dearly for.

Like most custom-built gaming systems, the Origin Genesis comes preinstalled with the operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit), the hardware drivers, minimal utilities, and not much more. That's a good deal for gamers, who never want to be have an extra piece of bloatware to blame for a poor showing on the game grid.

Performance
Origin Genesis (i7-3930K)

The Genesis oozes performance. The six-core processor has been overclocked to an insane 4.9GHz, which is 100MHz faster than the overclock on the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K). (Both are miles ahead of the Core i7-3930K's 3.2GHz stock clock speed.) As such, the Genesis is faster than the Maingear on multimedia benchmarks like our Handbrake video conversion (51 seconds for the Genesis, 54 seconds for the Shift) and Photoshop CS5 (2:12 Genesis, 2:15 Shift) tests. But to be honest, you'll hardly notice a difference of three seconds when you're rushing through a project. Both are faster than stock-clocked Core i7-3930K systems like the iBuypower Chimera 4-V1 ($2,499 direct, 4 stars).

Origin Genesis (i7-3930K)

The Genesis' three graphics cards are good for more-than-playable scores on all our benchmark tests at all settings, though ultimately the Maingear proved faster at the DX11-heavy Lost Planet 2. That said, both delivered insane frame rates, though you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between 207 frames per second (fps) and 232fps during real gameplay. If there's any nit to pick about the system's 3D performance, it's that the cooling fans on the graphics cards kick into full-power mode during strenuous gameplay and therefore push a lot of air through the system. It's not a lot compared to some older gaming PCs, but it still produces a din that's hard to ignore in a quiet room unless you're wearing noise-cancelling headphones.

Ultimately, the Origin Genesis (Core i7-3930K) provides an excellent high-end gaming experience, but it's not that much faster than the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K), which costs more than $600 less. The Genesis is worth keeping on your short list, to be sure, but the better buy remains the Maingear Shift Super Stock.

Canadian Diversified Investor: Investing and speculating in stocks

We discussed cash flow and appreciation in Real Estate, but what about the stock market? There are many strategies for picking undervalued stocks, but these are just that ?strategies?? to figure out which stock is most likely to appreciate. That is nearly as ?speculative? as using horse statistics to bet at the races!

Whether you buy real estate or stock, if you only buy for the appreciation that may happen or not, you?re just speculating. The other side of the medal is investing for the dividends, which are a tax advantaged return that often also is inflation. Dividends from solid companies, not only represent cash flow today but such dividends tend to increase over time.

Dividends from stock and net cash flow for real estate are ?the bird in the hand? while the appreciation is the ?many birds in the bush?.? Often, dividends constitute up to 40% of the total stock investment return and for a prudent investor they provide a live line during bad times as well as the means to build up cash for further investment creating a compounding return.

Dividends are that portion of a company?s earnings that its board of directors has chosen to return to the investor while the remainder goes to reinvestment in the company for expansion and/or acquisition. Often those dividend paying companies are perceived as mature companies that have ?not much growth? left and whose management does not see further investment opportunities. In reality nothing is further from the truth; research by experts such as James O?Shaughnessy backs this up plenty: companies that pay dividends and that regularly increase their dividend is, over the long term, one of the best performing categories in the stock market.

So, then how should you see your stock market investment?? Does this approach of investing in dividend paying companies provide a less speculative way towards financial independence and does it provide more confidence during a down turn helping the investor not to give in to the emotional urge to sell near the bottom of a bear market?

Well, as others have pointed as well, see investing in publicly traded companies as buying a piece of company ownership! Think about this in terms of the place where you are currently employed or even your place of ?self-employment?. These companies do have good and bad years in terms of making money or selling their goods or services. There are good and bad quarters, but overall the company makes steady progress and that is reflected in growing revenue and profits.? Yes, a bad quarter may be frustrating but most other employees barely notice it.? Yet, you may work there day in and day out; month in and month out; and sometimes year-in and year out.?
How would you feel about quitting your job every time there is a bad quarter? Probably you would declare yourself nuts; so why would you not have the same attitude when you own that company?s stock?? You don?t sell a perfectly good business just because the stock is down, or because some guy on TV states that he doesn?t like your company.? Next month that same talking head may recommend that you buy its stock!

Again, the stock price is purely a speculative valuation that may incorporate that company?s growth prospects and current financial position; but mostly the market prices the company on how it feels!? The mass psychology of the market is a much stronger factor in evaluating a company?s stock than dividends and earnings or revenue growth.?

So from now on, see a stock investment firstly in terms of the cash flow it provides you and how reliable that income stream is. Then aim for appreciation, which especially in the short term is purely set by market psychology and you may preferred to wait selling your investment when you get the highest price relative to its earnings. But what are you going to do with the proceeds?? Invest in another high price company in a hot market?? In a later post, we?ll be looking at the numbers behind a possible stock acquisition

Spurs strike first in West finals, win 19th in row

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? Gregg Popovich wanted some "nasty." The San Antonio Spurs obliged, and they've now tied NBA history.

Not to mention left the Oklahoma City Thunder agonizing about what could have been.

Manu Ginobili scored a playoff-high 26 points and the Spurs won their 19th in a row to tie the NBA record for longest winning streak kept alive in the playoffs, beating the Thunder 101-98 in the Western Conference finals opener on Sunday night.

Obeying orders snarled by their coach in a fourth-quarter timeout to play "nasty," the Spurs erased a nine-point deficit that stunned the Thunder, who had looked on their way to finally kicking the perception that they're the underdog.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 27 points. Russell Westbrook had 17.

"I talked to them about they've got to get a little bit uglier, get a little more nasty, play with more fiber and take it to these guys," Popovich said. "Meaning you have to drive it, you have to shoot it."

And when they started doing just that, the Thunder couldn't keep up.

The 2001 Lakers are the only other team to carry a winning streak this long in the playoffs ? and they did so on their way to a championship.

Game 2 is Tuesday night.

The Spurs matched the fourth-longest streak in NBA history, and with one more will become just the fourth team to surpass 20.

Tim Duncan had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Tony Parker shook off a dismal start to finish with 18 points. But it was Ginobili who steered the Spurs to strike first in a highly anticipated matchup of the West's top two teams for practically the entire regular season.

"They got us on our heels. We were not aggressive," Ginobili said. "And in the second half, we did have it."

On the other end, Oklahoma City's own Big Three struggled to find its shot early before awakening in the second half. Yet Westbrook still finished just 6 of 15 and took a nasty, face-first spill late in the fourth that had the entire Thunder bench crossing the court to check on their All-Star point guard underneath the opposite basket.

Westbrook appeared to favor his left leg when he got up, but he never left the game.

It was a tantalizingly close near-upset for the young Thunder, who were ousted in the Western Conference finals a year ago and were in position for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs until being overtaken by the Spurs in the final month of the season.

But it was a fittingly close opener for two franchises with so many similarities.

That includes Thunder general manager Sam Presti ? the architect of the Thunder's rapid turnaround from a 23-win season to consecutive Western Conference finals in just four years ? getting his big break in the NBA as intern in San Antonio.

And the Thunder didn't even need their own Big Three to keep things close.

Durant, Westbrook and Harden at one point through the second quarter were 5 of 21 ? a typically ominous stat line for a trio that had been responsible for nearly 70 percent of Oklahoma City's points through the playoffs so far. But for all the talk about San Antonio's superior bench, it was the Thunder's reserves who picked up the slack.

None more so than Derek Fisher, whose famous game-winner for the Lakers on this same court in the 2004 playoffs has made "0.4 seconds" a phrase that needs no further explanation to the Spurs. Eight years later, and the oldest player in this series at 37, Fisher already met his playoff average at halftime and finished with 13 points.

Gary Neal added 12 points and was the only other Spurs player in double figures.

Harden lost in the first round of his matchup with Ginobili, who's also a lefty and a former Sixth Man of the Year winner. Harden finished with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting but started by missing nine of his first dozen shots.

Tipping off another conference finals couldn't happen soon enough for Oklahoma City. With nothing to do but prepare for the Spurs all week ? and be asked about the Spurs ? the Thunder grew weary of questions about being perceived underdogs. About not having the same championship pedigree. About how they'll possibly stop a team rolling through one of the 10 longest winning streaks in NBA history.

So repetitive were the questions that Durant, visibly annoyed, suggested earlier this week that someone instead ask how the Thunder are going "to come at" the Spurs. That didn't stop Oklahoma City from facing more of the same at shootaround Sunday morning, when Thunder coach Scott Brooks tried quashing again the idea his team was somehow intimidated.

"They're not going to be in awe. They're going to have respect for them," Brooks said. "We know we can beat them."

They left still having to prove it.

Notes: Spurs C DeJuan Blair has given the Thunder fits in his three NBA seasons, including 22 points on them in a March win. But San Antonio's starting center for practically the entire season didn't play for the third consecutive playoff game. "The game will tell us what's appropriate and what's not," Popovich said before tipoff. ...Just because a Boston-Oklahoma City matchup in still possible in the NBA finals doesn't mean center Kendrick Perkins is hopeful about facing his old team. "I really don't care," Perkins said of the Celtics advancing. ...Gov. Rick Perry took in his first Spurs game this year, sitting courtside next to Spurs owner Peter Holt, a major donor to the former Republican presidential candidate.
